Stop Bothering Me! The Cure to Common Social Media Distractions

Whether you’re on Twitter, HootSuite managing your Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, or almost any other network, you will be presented with your connections latest updates, many of which include links to blogs, videos, podcasts, or other media. These things, while sometimes educational, can become a huge distraction when you find yourself wandering from blog posts to YouTube and then back again.

So how do you manage not becoming consumed by the links your connections share? One of the reasons we want to go to those links when we see them is because we feel like we will forget about them later and not find them again. So the solution is simply bookmarking them until later.

Instapaper is a great solution for this. You simply sign up for an account and put a little bookmarklet on your browser that says Read Later. Then, whenever you click on one of those links from your connections, you can click on that Read Later bookmarklet and it will be quickly saved to your Instapaper account for future reading.

Get Facebook Instant Messaging On Your Desktop Now

Are you itching for Facebook to make available its new messaging platform? Do you like chatting on the social network but wish it didn’t require you to keep a tab or window open in your browser?

Two U.K. developers, Daniel Offer and Henrik Larsson, designed a solution for just this: An independent application that syncs up with Facebook chat to allow you to IM all your buddies straight from your desktop. The desktop chat messenger client for Facebook called Chit Chat works a lot like other other instant messaging applications.

Offer and Larsson developed the product when they noticed two main problems with Facebook chat, according to an article in SmashingHub. “Not everyone wants to access the Facebook site itself every time they want to chat, post status updates, and write on walls, and the chat function on Facebook was” not very reliable.

Developer Discussion: What Do You Use For AJAX in PHP?

jquery_ajax_1010.jpgA quick question with a potentially longer discussion. What do you use for AJAX in PHP, and why?

IT Workers Still Looking to Jump Ship, Even In Rough Job Market

A Computerworld survey confirms what a Harris Interactive survey found in July: about 36% of IT workers are looking for a new job. Harris found 37%. Approximately 25% of IT workers polled by Computerworld are making less than they were two years ago. However, unemployment figures released today are grim. Will workers actually be able to find new jobs to jump to?

Yahoo let the cat out of the bag earlier this week, when one of its executives told Reuters that it would begin offering video chat via Yahoo Messenger to both the iPhone and Android smartphones.

The move would bring Yahoo, which already has 81 million Yahoo Messenger users, again to the forefront of chat services and posing a serious challenge to Apple’s own FaceTime.

When You Need to Send Someone an Important File Really Fast..

When you need to send an important file to a contact, you can either send it as an email attachment or, if the file size is too big for an email message, you can upload it to any of the file hosting services and share the download link with your contact over email.

IM software like Skype, Google Talk and Yahoo Messenger also let you to easily transfer files from one computer to another without imposing any restrictions on file size or the file type. This is generally quicker than sending files over email but the only downside is that both parties should be running the IM client in order or send or receive files.

In what can only be touted as “better late than never” news, Internet giant Yahoo! is today, at long last, launching its first ever applications designed for Android-based smartphones. There are now a trio of new apps available in the Android Market: a Yahoo! Mail app, Yahoo! Messenger app and a Yahoo! Search widget. Each of these applications have been built “from the ground up” for the Android platform, a company blog post proclaims, and they work on any Android phone running OS version 2.0 or higher.

Alongside the launch of these new Android apps, the company is also announcing the arrival of revamped Yahoo! Mail and Yahoo! News mobile Web apps, designed with iPhone and iPhone Touch users in mind.
