This CEO Gives Every Employee His Cell Number (Seriously)

Every now and then, a Quicken Loans employee accidentally “pocket” dials Chief Executive Bill Emerson. He doesn’t mind. “It’s an open culture,” he says. In the past six years, the 49-year-old has given out the number of his personal cell phone to each of the Detroit company’s 8,500 employees.

“It’s a personal choice for a CEO,” he says. “I encourage leaders to be accessible because it breeds an inclusive culture.”

AOL Wants to Renovate Your Inbox

AOL has come up with a way to make your existing webmail inbox more attractive and possibly more efficient

AOL (AOL) unveiled a new webmail service called Alto.

Well, that’s not entirely accurate. Alto is not a new webmail service in the way that Gmail and Yahoo! Mail are webmail services. And that’s a good thing—the world doesn’t need another e-mail address to consider switching to. (How’s that new outlook.com domain working out, Microsoft (MSFT)?)

GoPro Widens the View of Its Customer Base

Nicholas Woodman, the founder of the company that makes GoPro video cameras, often gets asked whether selling tiny, rugged cameras so surfers, skiers, and skydivers can record their exploits is just a niche business. “It’s becoming the norm to document more and more of our lives,” Woodman says. “If this is a niche, it’s a very big one.” So big, in fact, that he says his company, San Mateo (Calif.)-based Woodman Labs, will soon have the option of going public.

5 Ways to Get Email Overload Under Control

If you’re like most people with a connection to the internet and a job that requires you interact via email, then you probably know what email hell feels like. The only good news is that you’re not alone. In fact, the average person gets more than one hundred emails per day. The bad news is it’s not getting better.

The number of emails you receive will continue to grow every year. So what, if anything, can you do to get a grip on this email avalanche? Start with these five tips.

1. Set a Time Limit

According to a recent McKinsey Global Institute report, people spent 28% of their time writing, reading, and answering email. Most of it is unproductive because email is reactive by nature. The inherent gamification of clearing your inbox provides a brief feeling of accomplishment. But unless you’re doing customer support, your job description probably doesn’t include “respond to every email.”

Answering email is just one part of work. That’s why you should determine how much time you want to spend in your inbox on a given day, and don’t exceed it. One suggestion is to dedicate 15-minute blocks every two hours to staying on top of email without letting it take over your day.

1. Add Emphasis in Chat


Gmail’s instant messaging Chat function is one of the more basic options around, but there are a few bits of formatting you can use to add nuance to your online communication.

To bold a word, asterisk it like this: *Mashable (Mashable)*

To add italics, just underscore before and after the word like this: _Mashable_

And to strike a word through, add hyphens before and after like so: -Mashable-


2. Customize Your Web Clips


You’ve no doubt noticed the “Web Clips” line of text that appears above your Gmail inbox which contains news, blog posts, ads and other info. But did you know you can personalize it to make it more relevant to you?

Simply go to “Settings” on the top right of your screen and select the “Web Clips” tab. From there, you can search, browse from the categories, and add and remove items to your heart’s content.

Email UI Faceoff – GMail vs Hotmail vs Yahoo – The results

Welcome back to part two of our email UI faceoff – I recently wrote about the usability testing process, and set up a test for comparing the usability of Yahoo! Mail, Hotmail and Gmail.

Well, the results are in and we’ve got some pretty interesting feedback from the test – you can get directly to the test results yourself, or read on for our analysis and verdict.

Over the days we’ve been running the test, we had north of 300 people take it, and we think the numbers are a pretty good sample. Based on our analytics data, I could see that we had participants from 64 different countries, and it took the average user 2:56 to take the test.

So what did we learn from all that? Read on and find out…

Gmail Revamps Its Contacts Area To Be More Like Gmail. Which Is To Say, Good

Gmail is a great product; easily one of my favorites on the web. But it has an Achilles heel — well, actually it’s more like a bum leg: Contacts. Despite a solid contact area being a vital part of pretty much every email and productivity service, Gmail’s is awful. Or, it was awful. Today it’s getting a lot better.

Starting today, Google is rolling out its latest version of Gmail to users around the world. As you can see, it has been slightly redesigned to more prominently display both Contacts and Tasks. While you click on the link to go to the new Contacts area, you’ll notice that Gmail’s left sidebar transforms to show you labels for your various contacts. And the contacts themselves in the main view are now one big stream of names and email addresses — it looks a lot more like Gmail.

And it acts more like Gmail too. Clicking on a contact opens their card very quickly. From here you can easily edit information on the fly. There’s no longer a need to hit any “edit” and “save” buttons, all of this is done automatically. You’ll also notice a huge new area for Notes. Product Manager Benjamin Grol says this was one feature a lot of business users in particular were asking for.
