Working with Ipsos Research, we surveyed 3,000 mobile searchers who had recently made purchases across different industries to understand the role that click to call – from paid or organic search results – played in the purchase process. We found that calls are not only an important channel for research and transaction, but also the presence of a phone number in search results can strongly influence the perception of a business’s brand.

Click to call is important to consumers across all verticals.

Across all seven of the verticals we researched (Travel, Restaurant, Auto, Local Services, Retail, Finance, Technology) click to call was an important feature for people looking to find information and make purchases.

62% of consumers searching for auto parts and services would be very likely to use click to call, and 57% would use click to call to compare pricing.
60% of those searching for car rental information on their phone would use click to call, and 44% would call to make a reservation.
Within local services, 76% would use call features to schedule an appointment for professional services.
61% of people searching for financial services on their smartphones are likely to use click to call to make changes to their bank accounts.

Mark Jackson: What do you think are some of the most important elements of synergizing social and SEO efforts?

Rob Garner: First, leverage natural language for both search and social. Language is the tie that binds search and social together. Language informs content, dictates keyword theme, and sets the tone for social conversation. Study the language of your audience through keyword research and social listening to create solid strategies that will resonate in these channels.

Second, remember that without content, search engines and social networks do not exist. If your strategy leads with meaningful content, then you are on the right track. Content strategy that links between search and social channels is the key to overall success.

Third, get your search and social teams to work together, and not separately. This may not be much of a problem with individual practitioners who understand the nuances of both, but it is a big issue for business that operates these channels in silos. Get them together to understand how each of them can benefit the other to get more out of your overall efforts.

Make sure that you have a good description tag, so that search engines will direct your target customers to your website. Such a tag should not exceed the length of thirty words. Never go over 100 KB for this particular page.

TIP! Remember that search engines won’t be able to index anything that’s in a video. If you site is flush with videos, you have a little extra work to do.
You will want to put a lot of knowledge on your website but stick with your niche. For example, if the topic of your blog is baseball, you can write about baseball cards, baseball players, or even equipment for playing baseball. By providing a wide array of articles centered around specific subjects, you increase the likelihood that your site will appear near the top of search results. How Teens Do Research in the Digital World

OVERVIEW

The teachers who instruct the most advanced American secondary school students render mixed verdicts about students’ research habits and the impact of technology on their studies.

Some 77% of advanced placement (AP) and National Writing Project (NWP) teachers surveyed say that the internet and digital search tools have had a “mostly positive” impact on their students’ research work. But 87% say these technologies are creating an “easily distracted generation with short attention spans” and 64% say today’s digital technologies “do more to distract students than to help them academically.”

According to this survey of teachers, conducted by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project in collaboration with the College Board and the National Writing Project, the internet has opened up a vast world of information for today’s students, yet students’ digital literacy skills have yet to catch up:

Virtually all (99%) AP and NWP teachers in this study agree with the notion that “the internet enables students to access a wider range of resources than would otherwise be available,” and 65% agree that “the internet makes today’s students more self-sufficient researchers.”
At the same time, 76% of teachers surveyed “strongly agree” with the assertion that internet search engines have conditioned students to expect to be able to find information quickly and easily.
Large majorities also agree with the notion that the amount of information available online today is overwhelming to most students (83%) and that today’s digital technologies discourage students from using a wide range of sources when conducting research (71%).
Fewer teachers, but still a majority of this sample (60%), agree with the assertion that today’s technologies make it harder for students to find credible sources of information.
Given these concerns, it is not surprising that 47% of these teachers strongly agree and another 44% somewhat believe that courses and content focusing on digital literacy should be incorporated into every school’s curriculum.

Tablets and smartphones drive e-Commerce in Asia: Visa

SINGAPORE – The growth of smartphones and tablets, along with an improved perception of security is leading the internet to play a significantly bigger role in consumption across Asia, according to a recent study published by Visa.

In economies where smartphone and tablet penetration are high, consumers are already showing a tendency of picking up products through their phones or tablets. Of the 8,000 consumers surveyed, four in ten said they browsed products on their phones or tablet device last year. In fact, browsing on mobile phones exceeded 40 per cent in Korea, Hong Kong and Singapore. Hong Kong saw 13 per cent of its online purchases on mobile phones and 11 per cent on tablets.

“The prevalence of smartphones and tablets translates to easier online access for consumers to retailers anytime, anywhere, and we expect to see more people browsing and shopping on-the-go as a result,” said Paul Jung, Visa’s head of e-Commerce solutions for Asia, Central Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Russian Search Engine Yandex Enters Social Arena

Russia’s ad online industry continues to follow U.S. search engine marketing emerging trends in the local and social arenas. But it requires significant resources and an understanding of the local market, according to Elena MacGurn, senior SEO specialist at Covario.

MacGurn said some global brands have established an online presence in Russia, but few have tied that into social. Earlier this year, Yandex pulled in site content from social networks, partnering with Twitter to serve public tweets and social profiles in search results. The engine estimates having about 250 million personal profile pages hosted on blog platforms and social networks.

Yandex shows country-specific data for international users and offers different search results for geo-dependent queries in more than 1,250 Russian regions, according to MacGurn. In this case, I tested the phrase, «income tax rates.» While the Google search engine results page (SERP) displayed information on both 2012 and 2013 tax rates in the first five listings, the only dated information found in Bing’s results was a single listing mentioning 2011 tax rates.

The Google +1 Button Has No “Direct Effect” On Rankings

Google’s +1s do not have a direct effect on a site’s ranking in search results. Google’s Matt Cutts said as much in a “Power Searching With Google” hangout on Google+ (via Alex Graves)

Here’s more of what Cutts had to say in the hangout: “In the short term, we’re still going to have to study and see how good the signal is, so right now, there’s not really a direct effect where if you have a lot of +1s, you’ll rank higher.

But there are things like, we have an authorship proposal, where you can use nice standards to markup your webpage, and you’ll actually see a picture of the author right there, and it turns out that if you see a picture of the author, sometimes you’ll have higher click through, and people will say, ‘oh, that looks like a trusted resource.’

So there are ways that you can participate and sort of get ready for the longer term trend of getting to know not just that something was said, but who said it and how reputable they were.”

“I think if you look further out in the future and look at something that we call social signals or authorship or whatever you want to call it, in ten years, I think knowing that a really reputable guy – if Dan has written an article, whether it’s a comment on a forum or on a blog – I would still want to see that. So that’s the long-term trend.”

Bare Minimum SEO

If you don’t have the resources for a full SEO campaign, you don’t have to worry. The good news is that you can get away with bare minimum SEO. This will enable you to be competitive enough even with your limited resources. For smaller businesses and some larger ones, SEO is not an option because of various reasons.

Let’s take a look at minimal SEO tasks that you need to keep up with the competition.

Monitor Indexing Status

The first step to ensure that your site will be found by many searchers is indexing. You can check indexing status by usingGoogle Webmaster Tools. This will let you see the pages on your website that are indexed by Google. Just log in and click on Health then Index Status on the left side menu.

You can also click on the Advanced button to find other important information. Look at the number of indexed pages and try to see if there is an indication of a problem. If too few pages are indexed or too many are “not selected” then you have a problem. If this is the case then the next step of this bare minimum SEO process will help you solve your problem.
