Linguistic Myths and Adventures in Etymology

Or maybe you’re too posh to play along this way. Another widely held linguistic urban legend claims “posh” was an abbreviation for “port out, starboard home” stamped on tickets to designate the shadier and more luxurious sides of the ship when traveling between England and India. Yet, no tickets have been uncovered with “POSH” stamped on them, and evidence exists from the late 19th century of the use of the word posh in a similar way as it is used today. While its exact source is unknown, posh may derive from a Romani or an Urdu word, referring variously to money, a dandy, well-dressed, affluent. Phrases like “port out, starboard home” to define the word posh are sometimes called “backronyms” as we work backwards from the letters to an invented phrase and end up creating what appears to be an original acronym.

Mobile Games: The Economics of Freemium [Infographic]

by  | http://www.getelastic.com

Who creates a game only to give it away for free? Where’s the $$ in that?

The freemium business model is taking over — an estimated 65% of revenue generated by the 100 top grossing apps in the App Store, and an estimated 72% of total App Store revenue comes from freemium mobile games. In-game purchases like extra lives, special powers, virtual goods and personalizations are driving the revenue.

Retro Video/DOS Games For The Weekend

We thought we’d do something a bit different for the weekend, because not everybody is actually working during the weekend. And even if we do, we deserve a break from time to time. For just this occasion, we have poured across the four corners of the Web and amassed a collection of retro games to help you make the absolute most of your break time this weekend… and possibly any break time you take from this day forth.

Prince of Persia
Prince of Persia is a 2-D platformer with run and jump game play. Your hero must avoid deadly traps, solve some simple puzzles and engage in sword fights with guards. As the hero, you have an infinite number of lives, but you have to restart the level every time you die, and you must complete the game within an hour. The very fluid animation of your character is especially noteworthy. The game is still available for free downloading.

Web Design Checkmate: Using Chess For Success in Web Design

In this article, we’ll explore the relationship between the game of chess and the Web industry. We’ll learn fundamental lessons from the pawn, rook, knight, bishop, queen and king, and we’ll highlight the factors — both offline and online — that determine best practices. The game is beloved by many professionals, so it seems fitting to apply its great strategy and elegance to the digital age; certain practices might help you lead a more successful working life.

The business of building websites is one of constant change, adaptation and strategy. The way designers and developers build websites is often informed by the methods of others and their own trial and error. In light of this, we can draw a number of parallels — some philosophical, to a certain extent — between Web professionals and one of the oldest and most popular board games of all time (counting traditional and digital games). This game is chess.

Marketplace Spotlight: TicTacToe 6×6 – Get fun!

With the 6×6 grid you have to line up horizontally, vertically, or diagonally four «X»‘s or «O»‘s. You definitely have to pay more attention to this version or your opponent will sneak up on you.

Graphics are well done, the application ran smoothly, and it’s a great way to pass the time. The application is free and the only catch is an advertising banner that spans the screen just below the playing field. It’s not annoying and if it keeps the application free, it’s worth the screen space.

Tic-Tac-Toe addict? It’s an age old game that has been used to pass the time and it’s now available on the Windows Marketplace for Mobile with a twist. XIM Inc. is offering TicTacToe 6×6 as a free application that not only has the traditional Tic-Tac-Toe game but also a version that uses a 6×6 grid.

The game board is drawn on a sandy beach where you can compete against your friends or the computer. The traditional 3×3 game goes quick and it’s not long before your «ties» out number your «wins».  Enter the 6×6 grid.

Virtual Tiger Woods Takes A Tumble

Electronic Arts, the video game maker, made a point in recent months of standing by Tiger Woods, even as other companies withdrew from sponsorships.

The company continues to publish the Tiger Woods PGA Tour game. But at least in the short term, the game is following Tiger’s own golf results: not as good as they have been in the past.

NPD Group, which tracks video game sales, said that first-month sales of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 were down 32 percent from the previous version of the game a year ago.

Digital Special Issue: Gaming

Gaming has come of age. Joystick-obsessed guys who once hunkered down in basements for hours and dominated the medium now have guests. Women and kids are latching onto smartphones and other devices to play. Whether families—armed with Wii remote controls—bond bowling the night away or consumers on the go play individual or social networking games, the medium is reaching new audiences and heights.

Marketers are tapping into the zeitgeist that people like to play and that their lives are more fun when a little competition is involved. As David Griner reports, smartphones have transformed the world into one, big game board. Marketers have the digital tools needed to help consumers interact with brands in unprecedented ways while they go about their lives. So why aren’t they all getting in on the game?
