Smartphones pave the way for AT&T’s Q3: 6.1M devices sold, covering 64% of customers

Despite a big quarterly profit dip, AT&T is still succeeding at getting smartphones out the door. In its third quarter earnings report today, AT&T said that it shipped 6.1 million smartphones — which mostly included 4.7 million iPhones. It’s also reporting “record” sales for Android and Windows Phone smartphones.

Selling smartphones is important for AT&T, because it’s also what attracts valuable contract customers. The carrier now has 44.5 million contract customers, up 1.4 million from the last quarter. AT&T added 678,000 net wireless customers, including 151,000 contract subscribers. Overall, smartphone users account for 63.8 percent of its 105.9 million network customers (which also includes prepaid users and those with non-phone wireless devices).

AT&T reported $31.5 billion of consolidated revenue today, but net profits were only $3.6 billion (down from $6.8 billion last quarter). That dip is mostly due to AT&T’s stock buyback plan (which cost $3.8 billion during the quarter) and continued LTE deployment costs.

On a call with investors today, AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega said that more than a third of customers adopting its mobile share plans are choosing the large 10 gigabyte plan. He noted that the average revenue per user, or ARPU, was much higher for those customers.

For some reason, AT&T created a video starring de la Vega to explain today’s earnings. Check that out below:

Apple pulled out all the stops today in one of the biggest Apple events ever

I’m sitting down in my hotel room. It’s evening, and I’m taking a deep breath.

Today we had one of the biggest Apple events I can remember. Between hardware and software, Apple announced at least six new products today, seven if you include Apple Fusion Drive, and a whopping 23 new products if you include different models and build configurations.

Here’s the full list:

Tim Cook spoke to the huge number of new products — and his team’s effort — at the end of the event.

“We told you we’d deliver amazing innovation this year,” Cook said, “and I hope you’ll agree we did.” Leer más “Apple pulled out all the stops today in one of the biggest Apple events ever | venturebeat.com”

Solve the “Woman Problem” by Ending Your Stereotypes of Women

As Charles Hudson, a venture partner at SoftTechVC said yesterday on BloombergTV, investors feel safer making inherently risky bets on entrepreneurs who remind them of themselves. When the vast majority of venture firms are led by men, that’s where the money is going. Despite this, women are getting funded more often than ever before. They’re founding profitable companies which will have or have had successful exits.

She goes on to state that “Women don’t want to do startups because women want children”. She says startups are risky, require more time and women just don’t care about things like that.

Men want children just as much as women want children. This doesn’t seem to affect their career choices. As women are having children later and later in life, they have the opportunity to spend their twenties founding a startup. Even when they have children, if they have a partner who is willing to parent equally, they have the opportunity to spend their time founding a startup. Startups do require more time and risk, but women are just as free to take these chances. As more women are getting funding, the risk decreases as they can have a normal salary, benefits and many of the securities of working for a larger company.

She states that women in their twenties outearn men, so surely they can do whatever they want in their careers. Startups just aren’t for them.

Women often hit a glass ceiling in their late twenties/early thirties that their male peers don’t seem to hit. This, and not children alone, contributes to women leaving the workforce entirely or only working part time. When women don’t feel they are rewarded for their hard work – they leave. This is a problem that can and should be fixed. It is not a problem that is caused by women not caring about the work they do.

Penelope Trunk wrote another ridiculously egregious article yesterday on VentureBeat about the “Woman Problem” in tech startups. She’s written similar posts on Techcrunch before:

Women Don’t Want to Run Tech Startups Because They’d Rather Have Children

Why Diversity is Bad for Startups

I’ve always wholeheartedly disagreed with her remarks about women in technology, but she’s continued to push her views as guest posts on several of the blogs I read. I’m actually surprised VentureBeat and Techcrunch have published her posts considering her rampant generalizations of women in tech, but unfortunately I think they find it intriguing because she’s a woman herself. Thankfully, for the women who push themselves each day as founders or early startup employees, she is utterly wrong.

Her first assumption is “If diversity was really a problem, VCs would be solving it” Leer más “Solve the “Woman Problem” by Ending Your Stereotypes of Women”

Google Aggregates Their Entertainment Offerings Into ‘Google Play’

Jamie Rosenberg, Google’s Director of Digital Content, recently posted on Google’s official blog about the new Google Play integrated service. It allows you to store your books, movies, apps and games on the cloud, and then lets you access them from whatever Google device you desire. This is a smart move that not only helps remove the frustration of copying files from one place to another, but also helps Google future-proof against privacy — once users are using Cloud systems more often it will be easier for Google to ensure that you’re using paid-for apps and movies.

According to the blog post, “starting today, the Android Market, Google Music and Google eBookstore will become part of Google Play.”  It’s not entirely clear whether they’re going to rename the market completely, but it does seem like that’s the plan — your Android market application will be updated and renamed in the coming days and the Google Market will be no more. Pearltrees, a company offering a novel interface for sharing and finding content

Pearltrees launched in December 2009, and the company says it has been growing consistently at 15 percent per month, and that users have now created 15 million pearls which were assembled into 2 million trees. The startup reached 1 million unique visitors adding up to 30 million pageviews last month. Lamothe tells me that the company’s goals for 2012 include continued multi-platform development (it’s already available on the Web and for the iPad, with an iPhone app coming soon), an API, and beginning the move to HTML5.

Previous investor Groupe Accueil led the new round.
