Nike appoints Ogilvy to AFF Cup 2010 creative brief

It is believed that JWT, Leo Burnett and local shop Kinetic were involved in the pitch with Ogilvy & Mather clinching the deal.

Nike called the pitch earlier this year to seek a creative agency to help the brand enhance its presence at the AFF Cup 2010, a symbol of football prowess in Southeast Asia since its first staging in 1996.

Nike appointed Publicis Malaysia to a similar brief back in 2008.

More recently, Nike teamed up with the Oscar-nominated director Alejandro González Iñárritu, previously responsible for Babel, Amores Perros and 21 Grams, to direct its widely successful ‘Write the Future’ ad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Adidas launches mobile apps to expand brand

Adidas is to launch a series of branded mobile apps as it looks to engage with consumers and move beyond selling sports footwear and apparel.

The first of the launches, a free training app called miCoach, is designed to help customers to improve themselves “physically and emotionally”, according to Adidas UK marketing director Nick Craggs.

The training tool is the first of a series of “audience engagement” apps due to be launched through iTunes and on BlackBerry App World. The intention is to expand the brand’s consumer presence over the next five years. Further apps are expected early next year.

Consequently, brands have not been able to maintain their initial buzz scores, according to market research firm YouGov’s BrandIndex report.

The Brandweek Buzz Report by YouGov is a weekly consumer perception report that analyzes the most talked about brands based on buzz: The scores are based on weighing positive and negative perceptions of a brand. A +100 score is positive, a -100 score is negative, and a rating of zero means that the score is neutral. YouGov interviews 5,000 people each weekday from a representative U.S. population sample. Respondents are drawn from an online panel of 1.5 million individuals.

Brands capitalise on England defeat

Simon Hetherington, Kia Motors UK marketing director, said: “We know the result we want to see, but placing advertising in advance means being ready for anything – so our advertising agency Inocean came up with two alternative treatments.

“This is all part of our World Cup tie-up with News International that has seen Kia working closely with The Sun, The Times, the News of the World and Sky on a variety of projects, to maximise our involvement as official partners with the FIFA 2010 World Cup.”

Nissan meanwhile has run an ad in The Sun showcasing its Nissan GT-R brand. The ad, created by TBWA, runs with the headline “One match the Germans didn’t win”.

Separately, supermarket giant Asda is also capitalising on England’s defeat, by offering anyone with a Uruguayan passport a free eye test.

The supermarket issued the offer after the linesman, who was from Uruguay, disallowed Frank Lampard’s second goal in yesterday’s (Sunday) match.


Car brands Kia and Nissan have both run ads in national newspapers today (Monday), paying tongue-in-cheek reference to England’s World Cup defeat by Germany.

Kia has run an ad in The Times, created by Inocean, which promotes Kia’s seven-year warranty under the headline “Oh well, at least our warranty beats the Germans”.

We’ve picked ten of the top players from the tournament who have been bought and sold for massive transfer fees in the last few years.

For those not in on the soccer lingo, a transfer fee is the price a club pays to purchase a player from another club (this includes an approximately 15% fee for agents, which inflates the market and makes agents pursue more and more transfers).
