12 Must-Do Tasks for the New WordPress Site Owner

You know you’re sitting on a gold mine, don’t you?

That freshly-installed WordPress site of yours is poised to be a source of income, prospects and possibilities for your business. It has the potential to be a powerhouse resource, but there are a few things you’ll need to get in order first.

This post shares the top 12 power sources you can plug into with your brand-new WordPress site.

It may seem like a lot to do, but they’re listed in order of importance. Work on the top of the list first. Once you’ve got those things set up, move on to the rest of it.

Before you know it, you’ll have a WordPress website that’s fully charged and ready to power your business.

1. Make a decision: homepage or blog page?

One of the first decisions you’ll need to make is about how to structure your site.

When visitors type in your domain name, will they see a home page, or a blog page? With a WordPress site, either one is easy to create. The question is, what are the advantages of each?

Homepages with some general information about your site and an opt-in form are a great way to welcome new visitors.

But suppose you have a blog — won’t it get lost if it’s not on your home page?

Not necessarily. When you talk about your blog posts — either on social media, in an email or on another site — you’ll share a link that goes directly to them.

People can find your blog using your navigation menu, too.

On the other hand, if your blog is the star of the show, you may want it to be the first thing people engage with.

There’s no right or wrong answer here. It’s a strategic decision that should be part of your overall site planning. And it’s easy enough to change later, so don’t over think it: just choose one and test it out.

2. Build connection with an email list

To build a genuine, ongoing connection with your readers, nothing beats email.

The email inbox is an intimate space, and a privileged place to inhabit. You’re there by invitation only, and because of that, you’re apt to get the attention you want.

3. Give us a reason to share our email address

That intimate, privileged inbox space is also pretty cluttered for most of us. We don’t want any more email than we already have, so you’ve got to give us a compelling reason to invite you into our inbox.

Unless your site is already well-known and an established authority, it’s not enough to promise “updates.” Give us something we can hold in our hands, listen to, watch, or look forward to.

  • Create an ebook that solves a sticky problem, and give it away in exchange for an email address.
  • Record a downloadable audio interview, conversation or presentation.
  • Make a video or tutorial that shows us a technique you’ve learned.
  • Create a short course you deliver by autoresponder, like Internet Marketing for Smart People.

Whatever you decide to create, make sure it’s so desirable that your visitors will be willing to share their email address to get their hands on it.

WordPress SEO Plugins – 2010

I haven’t done an updated “Reccomended SEO Plugins for WordPress” since 2008, so I figure it’s about time to correct that problem.
SEO

Surprisingly, the number pure SEO plugins is relatively short. This is due to two factors: my use of Thesis as a Theme (see Thesis Theme Review) and WordPress SEO Plugin.

WordPress SEO – In the past, I haven’t been a huge fan of all-in-one SEO plugins, but this year Joost De Valk changed my mind. This plugin does the work of 8 plugins. It builds XML sitemaps, breadcrumbs, builds the canonical tag, takes care of robots, Google analytics, and more. Really, if you use only one plugin from this entire post, this is the one to get.

Scribe SEO – Scribe SEO is a plugin that checks your post for keyword focus and bunch of other SEO factors (see my Scribe SEO Review for more details). Dagon Design Sitemap Generator – An HTML sitemap is one of the key features of making your website more crawlable. This plugin builds the sitemap and updates itself when new pages or posts are added.

WP Super Cache – With the announcement that site speed became a ranking factor, you need to pay attention to site performance. Caching is one of the easiest ways to do it.

WPtouch – As smart phones become more ubiquitous, everyone is going to need a mobile-friendly version of their website. Rather than having two versions, though, this plugin takes care of all the heavy lifting for you.

Yet Another Related Posts Plugin – This is a great plugin because it allows you to expose your readers and the search engine spiders to other related content.

How to Do A Content Audit of Your Website

If you have a website that’s been around for a few years and you’re looking for ways to make some improvements, one of the tactics I recommend is doing a content audit.

When you do a content audit you have a few goals in mind:

* Get rid of any low quality or unimportant pages
* Look for pages or sections that can be improved or updated
* Improve your rankings by more effectively using your link equity, internal anchor text, and interlinking your content

Get the Data
your inbound link equity can only support a certain number of pages …

The first thing you need to do is to get an understanding of where your website currently stands. You’ll need a list of the pages of your website, the number of inbound links, and amount of visitors your page receives. If you are using Webmaster central, you can export a spreadsheet of all the pages with the number of links. The next thing you have to do is add a column for page views. I like to use a timeframe between a year and year and half.

Depending on the number of pages your website has, it could take a while to get all this data. This is the perfect task for an intern or outsourced labor from a place like ODesk. I recently performed this task on a website that has 1800 URL’s. It cost me $75, and I had the data back in just over 24 hours.
Identify the Low Performing Pages

The two primary factors I like to look at are how many links does a post/page have and how much traffic did it generate in the past 18 months. Any page that generated less than 100 page views is a candidate for deletion. Additionally, any page that generated less than 25 links is also a candidate for deletion.
