NFC Technology What is it… | qrcodepress.com

Near field communication (NFC) technology embodies a set of standards for smart phones and other mobile devices that establish communications between such devices using radio frequencies.NFC Technology and Smartposter These transmissions can only be facilitated over short distances, hence the name of the technology. Typically, devices must either be touching or within an inch of one another in order to interface through NFC, but these devices do not require wires of any sort. NFC technology is an effective means of data transmission, especially in the commerce field.

Radio frequency identification (RFID) first emerged in 1983. NFC technology was developed as an offshoot of RFID, but did not garner any significant attention until 2004, when Nokia, Philips, and Sony founded the NFC Forum, a conglomerate that aims to promote the standardized use of the technology. Nokia was the first company to produce an NFC-enabled phone in 2006, thus drawing a significant amount of consumers attention to the technology. In recent years, NFC technology has become the cornerstone of mobile commerce.

Mobile commerce relies heavily on NFC technology. The technology enables smart phones and similar mobile devices to serve as mobile payment platforms, which can be used by consumers to make purchases of goods and services. Only mobile devices that are equipped with NFC chips can participate in mobile commerce. Typically, the financial information of a consumer is stored within this chip, or the mobile device itself. This information is then accessed to make transactions. By itself, NFC technology cannot initiate mobile transactions. Thus, mobile applications, often called mobile wallets, are needed to facilitate these payments. Leer más “NFC Technology What is it… | qrcodepress.com”

NFC technology being used for more than commerce

There are many uses for NFC technology that extend beyond the world of commerce. Before the technology became the backbone of mobile commerce, for instance, it was used in marketing to provide consumers with engaging experiences. Now, the technology is becoming more popular in the world of security because of its uses in access control. Ironically, NFC technology is currently surrounded by controversy concerning its security and how it can be easily exploited. The security industry has only ever seen these concerns justified in regards to commerce, however, meaning that the technology may be well suited for other purposes.

NFC-enabled sleeves serve as new form of access control

Both the University of San Francisco and the Villanova University have launched pilot projects concerning NFC technology and access control. These projects make use of NFC-enabled sleeves for an iPhone, developed by Ingresoll Rand. These sleeves are meant to provide students with access to certain areas of a campus as well as allow them to make use of some of the amenities that can be found therein. Thus far, students have shown a great deal of support for the NFC-sleeves now donning their smart phones and want to see more NFC services pop up around campus.

Targeting Your Next-Generation Wallet

http://www.mediapost.com | by

The mobile wallet has been a solution in search of a problem for a number of years now. The promise of integrating payment and marketing tools into a portable digital device (namely the cell phone) is as obvious as it has been elusive. If digital marketing can be tied more directly to actual point of sale, then marketers can close the loop on measuring ROI in ways never before possible. The payoffs for ad impressions, loyalty programs, offers-based programs, etc. all can be tied to purchase. The implications for media attribution, consumer behavioral data and just about everything else in the media value chain are enormous.

While mobile wallets have been a dream of marketers, they have not been able to demonstrate the necessary value for two key constituencies, consumers and merchants. For the end user, mobile payments and wallets don’t solve much of anything, since pulling out a cell phone is not much better than pulling out a credit card or a loyalty card.

And what is in it for the payment chain? As Alistair Goodman, CEO of geo-located mobile solutions provider Placecast explains it, “There has been a realization in the mobile wallet space that there is not a lot of new revenue to be generated by the transactions because that is a very efficient channel and all the players are quite optimized.” There is also not a lot of incentive for merchants to get with a program that merely shifts the method of payments consumers will be using anyway. With 12M+ Downloads, Scan Launches Scan-to-gram, A New Way To Follow People On Instagram

RIP EMPSON | http://techcrunch.com

Three guys from Provo, Utah set out on a mission to make QR codes, those boring pixellated, black-and-white squares come alive — in other words, to extend their functionality by turning them into realworld “like,” “follow,” and “buy” buttons. And it’s been working. In February, Scan announced a seed funding round from Shervin Pishevar, Google Ventures, CRV, Start Fund, Social + Capital, Ludlow Ventures, and more. The company moved their operations from Utah to San Francisco, and is currently sitting at just over 12 million downloads across iOS devices.

How did it become one of the top downloaded QR code scanner in just over a year? Because, beyond the basic scanning functionality offered by a host of iOS and Android apps, Scan offers a variety of services and features that let SMBs and enterprise companies create mobile optimized QR code, NFC, and other tech experiences to let users can QR codes with their phone and immediately “like” products or businesses on Facebook, follow on Twitter, check in on Foursquare, etc. Check out how businesses are using it here.

As Scan is in the business of creating apps that extend the potential application of QR code tech, Scan is today leveraging the buzz around Instagram to let businesses, organizations, etc. build their Instagram user base via QR codes. The new app, appropriately called Scan-to-gram, lets users scan QR codes and instantly follow a company and its employees.

The company has already lined up a bunch of notable Instagrammers to be part of its initial launch, including Warby ParkerZooey DeschanelNikeMarc JacobsGQVevoAudiNat Geo, and the L.A. Lakers — to name a few.

With Instagram’s acquisition by Facebook, the platform is becoming increasingly appealing — beyond what it already had. Brands are excited because it provides early adopter-types and mobile enthusiasts with a simple way to boost their followers, which gives them access to another social media channel and potential branding opportunities.
