Minimalist designs make the simple things simple, and the complex things possible. My aim is to combine simple elegance and functionality to a timeless form. – Xavier Lust.
Minimalism as a web design trend came back not long ago. It was a move away from gaudy, elaborate graphics and design schemes, and a shift back towards simple, understated design. It was a comeback of the design at its most basic and simple elements, free from superfluous shapes and complex color combinations.
I would have written a shorter letter, but I didn’t have the time. – Mark Twain.

Aspects and Features of a Modern Minimal Web Design
In today’s world web minimalism is still all the rage, and the main reason of the trend’s popularity is people’s love for friendly and lightweight yet stylish and unobtrusive simple designs. By simple is not meant primitive. Some of the websites with minimalistic design have a number of shiny effects and use advanced forms of CSS and Ajax. But they seem to favor a cleaner, more clutter-free experience, and put a premium on white space.
So, what are the main distinctive features and aspects that make a modern web design minimalistic?
It is too easy for novices, too difficult for professionals. – A saying about playing Mozart.
Minimizing Content
The core function of a minimalistic design is to be able to present a clear message to the visitors. In order to achieve that, it is necessary to re-think the content and modify it to meet the design’s requirements. You’ll have to remove most of the graphic elements and images, but you should do it wisely, because it is very easy to go too far in an attempt to simplify the layout therefore you risk making the design boring.

Minimalism in art appeared in the late 1960’s. The main principle of the movement is simplicity in form and content; in order to achieve this, personal expression is removed. The aim of minimalism artists is to build their compositions in such a way that visitors perceive the artwork as deeper and more intense.
It can be achieved by making the themes clear from clutter. Minimalism is often manifested as abstract art, but it can also be very beautiful.

There are so many techniques when it comes to web design, it’s hard to get a full grasp on all of them. Minimalism is one of the few which stand out from the crowd in a seemingly ubiquitous flow. The trend follows the concept of keeping things simple and easy to work with.
Removing clutter from pages helps users focus their attention on the things that really matter. Page content, images, contact information, and the presentation hierarchy that removes gradients and web 2.0 distractions. Check out a few of the ideas below in regards to minimalistic designs and see how you can incorporate these into your own projects.
How Does Minimalism Work?
The idea of minimalism in designs is not a new one. In fact, it’s been present in the art community for centuries. With the move into digital design we find things to be a bit different as the objects we’re designing are constantly changing.
Minimalism works by playing on your visitors keen attention, or rather lack thereof. Most visitors who visit your blog or website will not spend more than a few seconds on the page, maybe a few minutes if you’re lucky. This isn’t because they truly don’t care or hold apathetic viewpoints towards your content. Rather in our world of fast-paced action users know how easy it is to jump from one website to the next in almost an instant.
Playing on these pieces to your users attention span by placing content is easy to read layouts is the basis behind which minimalistic designs are built. You will frequently see much more typography and white space with fewer images and buttons as distractions.
Although there isn’t any guidebook for running minimalistic designs there are plenty of guidelines to follow. Additional white space is one such idea, along with the removal of unnecessary page elements.

Textured backgrounds in website design are common, especially in grunge designs. But they’re used in a variety of other design styles, too.
Textures can add visual interest to an otherwise-minimalist design, or can add that extra bit of detail that really makes a design pop.
Paper textures are by far the most common, but other regularly-seen textures include stone, concrete, rust, and fabric. And they’re not just used for backgrounds, either. Some sites incorporate textures into every aspect of their design, while others just use them for accents.
Below are more than thirty great website designs that make use of textures. Feel free to share your favorites, whether featured here or not, in the comments…

A stone-textured background is set apart with subtle coloring in the header. The texture repeats throughout the background.
Hugs for Monsters uses a bold stone texture throughout the background on their site. Incorporating it into the header adds a sense of cohesiveness to the site.
Minimalism is a word that gets tossed around in a lot of different contexts. Whether it be a lifestyle or an art form, saying something is «minimalistic» can take on a variety of meanings.
In the web design field, minimalism is carving out an ever-increasing niche among designers that are looking to convey important content in a new way. Like just about any trend or theory in the web design world, minimalism can be easy to get wrong.
So what is minimalism in web design? Just as important, what is it not?
It’s easy to see how a minimal web design can be misconstrued as something that requires less effort or time to create. After all, conveying the feeling of simplicity and a primary focus is really the purpose of a minimal design.
However, saying that it requires less work couldn’t be further from the truth. Minimal web designs are strategically stripped of excess features and gimmicks in order to deliver a clear and concise message to the target audience.

Over the past few months, the use of extreme textured images in web design is starting to die down. It was used so excessively that is was almost everywhere we looked when browsing the web. Other developments, such as the use of minimalism in web design and various other styles have slowly pushed the dramatic use of texture out of the window.
It does however still play a big part in the world of designing for the web, as this showcase presents. Although there are still some pretty excessive use of texture in a few of the following designs (but hey, it does look good!), the majority of them use texture as a subtle touch-up to their backgrounds, headers or footers, adding that minor but ever-so-important touch of visual interest — why have a plain white background when you can add a tiny speck of texture that just makes your design pop?
This showcase presents thirty-eight fresh examples of texture in web design, from creative design agencies, modern restaurants and even plastic film packaging companies. Let us know your favourite design!

Living For Art
Jasmin’s Living For Art portfolio uses a very delicate crumpled paper texture in the background of his web design, making the sharp, white typography pop from the page.
Progressive One

Negative space is often misunderstood as a tool to implement in certain designs that call for a simple aesthetic.
However, it is in fact something you should pay attention to and carefully structure in every design you create.
This guide discusses what negative space is and how to effectively use it to analyze and improve your designs.
Negative space, also known as whitespace, can be loosely defined as the area of a page not occupied by content. More appropriately, it is the space between specific items on the page.
Negative space does not have to be white, or even solid in color. It can contain gradients, patterns or background objects.
In the example below, you’ll see that it contains complex graphical content, yet it still employs negative space between the headline and the search bar. Continuar leyendo «Negative Space in Webpage Layouts: A Guide»
s designers, we all know that a minimalist design can achieve beautiful results.
Still, many designers have trouble creating one; either they have a hard time making a page with so few elements look good or the final result just doesn’t look “complete.”
There are many articles on the Web about minimalism and this article aims to help you achieve a minimalist design that is beautiful but not bare.
To top it off, we’ll present a small showcase of minimalist designs, so that you can analyze why some designs work and others don’t.
What Is Minimalist Design?
Minimalist design has been described as design at its most basic, stripped of superfluous elements, colors, shapes and textures.
Its purpose is to make the content stand out and be the focal point. From a visual standpoint, minimalist design is meant to be calming and to bring the mind down to the basics.
The design movement began in Switzerland and was then applied to a variety of media: graphic design, architecture, music, literature, painting and, more recently, web design.
Although minimalist design took off decades ago, the early days of the Internet did not show it. Even without the rotating logos, marquees and bright colors, website designs were cluttered and overbearing.
We’ll go over the basic principles of minimalist design. But even if you choose not to pursue a minimalist aesthetic, the lessons here can help you simplify your design, whatever your style.
Less Is More
As mentioned, minimalism brings the most important content to the forefront and minimizes distractions for the user. If a page has too many elements, the viewer will be confused about where to look or misinterpret the priority of each element. A minimalist design puts the focus squarely on the content.

When it comes to web design, my experience demonstrates to me that it’s easier to add to a design rather than to take away from it. The challenge with minimalist layouts lies in the conundrum of making something beautiful with basic design elements —and with as few of them as possible.
Lately, I’ve been attracted to simple and clean designs. Design Instruct is a testament to my affinity towards creating designs that present the idea of «less is more.»
In this collection are masterfully created minimalist designs for your inspiration in your current and future work. This is a follow up of a collection called 40 Beautiful Examples of Minimalism in Web Design published last year. (You should check that out as well, if you haven’t already.)
