Mark Cuban: What Entrepreneurs Need to Know Before Starting a Business


 

Mark Cuban is known for being outspoken and no-nonsense when it comes to business. This week, the billionaire tech entrepreneur, investor and owner of the Dallas Mavericks participated in a question and answer session on popular social news site reddit where he discussed all things business, basketball and, of course, Shark Tank.

When starting a business, Cuban said every entrepreneur needs to know that it’s not so much about having a killer idea as it is about being completely prepared to take a product or service to market. “Everyone has ideas, most don’t do the work required to get the job done,” he wrote.

Another thing aspiring business owners need to keep in mind: Sales are the most important aspect of a small business, Cuban wrote. “No sales, no company.”

Cuban, who along with Todd Wagner, started Audionet, combining their mutual interest in college basketball and webcasting. This venture grew into what would eventually become Broadcast.com, acquired by Yahoo! in 1999 for $5.9 billion in Yahoo! stock. Currently, Cuban is the owner of the Dallas Mavericks, of Landmark Theatres, and Chairman of HDNet.

“If you develop Social Games I want to talk to you. Im looking to invest in games, developers and projects

Im looking for consumer and corporate applications. I’m not looking for knockoffs of existing games/apps. I’m also looking for physical products that have integrated social gaming components . My preference for all the above is that they run on or integrate deeply with Facebook and/or Itunes 10/Ping and all the devices they support.”

You Should NEVER Listen To Your Customers

An article by John Doerr had a great quote from technology luminary Alan Kay that every entrepreneur needs to remember “The best way to predict the future is to invent it.”I’m working with a company that at one point had a product that was not only best in class, but also technically far ahead of its competition.  It created a better way of offering its service and customers loved it and paid for it. Then it made a fatal  mistake.  It asked its customers what features they wanted to see in the product and they delivered on those features. Unfortunately for this company, its competitors didn’t ask customers what they wanted. Instead, they had a vision of ways that business could be done differently and as a result better.  Customers didn’t really see the value or need, until they saw the product.  When they tried it , they loved it.

So what did my company do when they saw what their competitor had done ? They repeated their mistake and once again asked their customers what they wanted in the product. Pretty hefty concepts: who we trust, how we impress and who impresses us, how we participate in social networks, new potential for relationships, and adding value.

In all of those instances, the answer is to be more you.

Take a look. Trust is something that depends on your credibility, which is the results of your actions and how others perceive you through them. This in turn determines how we impress, while our own filters dictate who impresses us.

Ten Ways to Be More You



This week we tackled some pretty hefty concepts: who we trust, how we impress and who impresses us, how we participate in social networks, new potential for relationships, and adding value.

You may want to be liked by everyone, choose the middle road. I say stop caring so much about what other people think, and start spending more time becoming who you want to be. There are tremendous advantages to that.
