IAB and MMA Release “Mobile Phone Creative Guidelines”

With the rapid evolution of the mobile marketplace, there is a demand for standards and guidelines to unify the advertising industry. To expand on current industry accepted ad units,the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) and the Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) released “Mobile Phone Creative Guidelines” for public comment, simplifying the development of ad units across the industry.

The guidelines provide additional directives necessary to empower creative shops and publishers to use mobile for more dynamic, rich consumer experiences. Additionally, it also aligns across the IAB’s “Display Advertising Guidelines.”

The “Mobile Phone Creative Guidelines” incorporates input from marketing and media authorities to establish detailed specifications for mobile phone ad units. The guidelines address smartphone and feature phone devices and are relevant for both mobile web and in-app inventory. Additionally, they include ad specifications for both basic and rich media units.

Balancing the requirements of both the marketer and the consumer experience, the guidelines address varying factors such as different data connections (WIFI, 3G, 4G, etc.), carrier plans, Z-Index range and even the impact of the reduced processing power inherent in mobile device for file load size and web display.

Says Machine-Driven ‘Do-Not-Track’ Systems Limit Users’ Freedom of Choice

Publishers Will Not Be Penalized by Council of Better Business Bureaus for Ignoring Web Browsers’ Ineffective & Confusing ‘Do-Not-Track’ Mechanisms

NEW YORK, NY (October 9, 2012) — The Interactive Advertising Bureau’s (IAB) is issuing its full support for the Digital Advertising Alliance’s (DAA) position against machine-driven “do-not-track” (DNT) browser standards, because they restrict consumer control and freedom of choice. The announcement comes on the heels of a just-released DAA statement opposing the DNT settings automatically imposed on consumers by the Microsoft Internet Explorer version 10 (IE10) browser.

The DAA’s statement addresses publishers’ concerns about what will happen if they do not honor IE10-imposed DNT flags. DAA, the digital advertising industry’s self-regulatory body, does not require companies to honor DNT signals fixed by browser manufacturers and set by them in browsers. Specifically, it is not a DAA principle or in any way a requirement under the DAA standards to honor a DNT signal that is automatically set in IE10 or any other browser. The Council of Better Business Bureaus (CBBB) will not sanction or penalize companies that ignore the default settings on IE10 or other browsers and intermediaries. In contrast, the DAA and CBBB will continue to impose disciplinary measures on companies that violate legitimate consumer choices under the “AdChoices” self-regulation program.

In a report issued last week, researchers from the Harvard Business School determined that the ad-supported internet ecosystem was responsible for 5.1 million jobs and contributed $530 billion to the U.S. economy in 2011 alone.

This afternoon, we gave a keynote address at the Interactive Advertising Bureau’s MIXX Conference in New York, entitled “Display 2015: Smart and Sexy.”

As you know by now, we’re investing significantly to make display advertising better for users, advertisers and publishers. Display advertising really is at the heart of what we’re doing at Google these days. 99 percent of our top 1,000 clients are now running campaigns on the Google Display Network. And last year, they increased their spending on display advertising by over 75 percent.

Today, we explained why we think display advertising is about to go through the biggest and most important revolution in its history. We made seven predictions about where display advertising will be in 2015:

* 50 percent of ad campaigns will include video ads bought on a cost-per-view basis (that means that the user will choose whether to watch the ad or not, and the advertiser will only pay if the user watches). That’s up from very little today.
* Today, advertisers are starting to deliver ads that are tailored to particular audiences. Many are using real-time bidding technology, so that they can bid on the ad space that they think is most valuable. In 2015, 50 percent of these ads will be bought using this real-time technology.
* With smartphone growth skyrocketing, mobile is going be the number one screen through which users engage with advertisers’ digital brands.
* Today, the “click” is the most important way that advertisers measure their display ad campaigns, but it’s not always the best measure—especially if an ad campaign is designed to boost things like brand awareness or recall. With new measurement technologies emerging, in five years, there will be five metrics that advertisers commonly regard as more important than the click.
* Just like most news articles on the web today can be commented on, shared, discussed, subscribed to and recommended, in 2015, 75 percent of ads on the web will be “social” in nature—across dozens of formats, sites and social communities.
* Rich media formats work. They enable great creativity and interaction between users and advertisers, but today they only represent about 6 percent of total display ad impressions. That will increase to 50 percent, for brand-building ad campaigns.
* All the investments that are making display advertising smarter and sexier will help publishers increase their revenues. Display advertising is going to grow to a $50 billion industry in five years.

IAB Seeking to Set Standards

Bureau quietly marshalling effort to fix measurement mess

Web audience measurement amounts to a Tower of Babel, with various vendors and Web publishers speaking in a multitude of tongues. The result is confusing advertisers and frustrating online publishers who believe the lack of consistency is costing them revenue.

The Interactive Advertising Bureau is quietly trying to change that, spearheading the creation of a gold standard for Web measurement.

The IAB’s initial focus is online audience, but it hopes to ultimately standardize ad exposure across all media platforms.

“The ultimate goal is to be able to put media together in ways that are accountable, clear and useful to those who are buying and selling media,” said Sherrill Mane, svp of industry services for the IAB. Mane was careful to say that there was no timeline for an RFP and that the IAB wasn’t out to force its will on the big measurement companies like Nielsen and comScore. But she stressed that the IAB’s initiative was broader than previous efforts to improve media measurement.

Online Ads Constricted Due To Privacy Concerns

Do you think that there are too many ads flooding the online space? According to a new study from the Ponemon Institute, marketers using online behavioural advertising; tracking user’s Web browsing habits, are using 75% less of it than they would like to due to privacy concerns.
