This script lets you root any Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich or Android 4.1 Jelly Bean device
by EMIL PROTALINSKI

Last week we told you about a tool that lets you root any HTC Android device. If you don’t like HTC, but are still on Android, then we have good news for you: there’s a script out toady that reportedly roots Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) on most devices. You can check it out over on XDA Developers.
As before, I’d like to emphasize that if you don’t know or understand the risks of rooting your device, please don’t do it. You’re going to have to follow through and there is always a risk of bricking your device, rendering it useless.
With that out of the way, here’s what XDA Recognized Developer Bin4ary, the script’s creator, has to say about it… Continuar leyendo «This script lets you root any Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich or Android 4.1 Jelly Bean device»
HTC Primo could bring Beats Audio and Android 4.0 to the masses
A new leak outlines the features of the HTC Primo, a phone that could bring Android Ice Cream Sandwich and Beats Audio technology to the mid-range.
We can expect plenty of smartphone-related leaks over the coming weeks, as information on the devices set to debut at Mobile World Congress starts to circulate. We’ve already seen the LG X3this week, and here we have another Android phone that could show up at the end of February – the HTC Primo.
Despite being currently blessed with a name that suggests a top-end spec, the Primo’s leaked feature list reveals it to be a far more mid-range offering, however that’s not to say it isn’t interesting.

Apple vs. Android: War Without End?
Steve Jobs’s hatreds are nearly as famous as his innovations: buttons, styluses, complicated remote controls. He loathed nothing more, however, than Google’s Android—a total rip-off, in his opinion, of Apple’s work. “I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple’s $40 billion in the bank, to right this wrong,” he vowed, according to Walter Isaacson’s recent, hefty biography. Armed with his company’s arsenal of patents, Jobs threatened “thermonuclear war.” He sued the three leading Android handset makers—HTC, Motorola, and Samsung—in countries all around the world, seeking to have their products banned.

Apple’s attacks on Android have backfired. Should the company call a truce?
But nearly two years after the first salvos were fired, Apple’s war on Android has ac-complished almost nothing. And it’s starting to look as if Apple’s patent portfolio isn’t nearly as lethal as Jobs seemed to think.
Three of Apple’s claims against Motorola recently got tossed out by the International Trade Commission. Many of Apple’s claims against HTC and Samsung failed as well, and the two claims that were upheld were both easy to work around. Samsung simply widened the frame on its Galaxy Tab, and HTC removed a tiny software feature that lets you tap a phone number in an email and pull up a menu of options. Meanwhile, Android keeps growing and has become the top smartphone platform. Samsung has leap-frogged Apple to become the biggest smart-phone maker in the world.

The Tangled Web of Lawsuits in Mobile [INFOGRAPHIC]
Who’s suing whom in the mobile industry? It can be a tough question to answer, even if you’re closely following all the lawsuits that have been thrown around in the last couple of years.
Nokia sued Apple and vice versa, with both companies claiming the other was infringing on its patents. Both companies have also slapped other companies with lawsuits, again mostly over patent infringement or price fixing. Add other IT giants, such as Kodak, RIM, HTC, Google (Google), Sony Ericcson and LG into the mix, and soon it’ll feel like everyone is suing everyone else.

Follow-up: AT&T Tilt2 leaked ROM update
A leaked ROM update for the AT&T Tilt2 surfaced the other day and we’ve had a few days to tinker with it. The ROM is based on the 21887 build of Windows Mobile 6.5 and runs HTC Sense 2.5. It also has an updated radio (4.49.25.95).
Compared to the original shipped ROM for the Tilt2, the updated ROM is noticeably more responsive. Sense 2.5 flows smoothly and apps are pulled up with little or no delay. ROM Chefs, such as NRGZ28, have already begun to incorporate parts of this build into their cooking. The ROM has potential but as is, still has a ways to go before it can be stamped «official» ROM.

Smartphone Faceoff: HTC EVO 4G vs. iPhone 4
Ben Parr
This Web Faceoff series is supported by Buick.
Last week in our Web Faceoff series, we asked you, the readers, to help us answer a question: Where do you get more of your news: Twitter or newspapers?
At least among Mashable’s (Mashable) readers, social media was the clear winner. Twitter dominated the faceoff with 1,005 (52%) while newspapers as a whole only garnered 418 (22%). 282 of you said neither, while another 211 voted that both were equal sources of news.
This week, we’re jumping away from social media and into smartphones. In the past, we’ve compared the iPhone 3GS to the Nexus One and even the iPhone prototype to the Droid Incredible. However, in honor of the launch of the iPhone 4, we thought it was time to revisit the iPhone vs. Android (Android) debate.

SlashGear Week in Review – Week 30 2010
Welcome to this week’s better late than never edition of the Week in Review! Monday we learned that HTC was planning to move from the hard to get Super AMOLED screen for its Desire and Nexus One smartphones to a Super LCD. The catch is that both screens will be used and apparently, there will be no way for the buyer to tell what screen they are getting.

Acer’s Stream smartphone has been graced with an official launch date for the UK. The Stream will launch on August 9 and pack a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU and a 5MP camera. The handset will cost the equivalent of $615 in the UK. A sweet new camera app was unveiled Monday that takes photos people shoot at the same angle as historical photos and superimposes the historical photos over the top. The software was invented at MIT.
LG announced this week that it can’t meet the demand from Apple for screens of the iPad and iPhone. Despite that fact, LG is apparently thinking about making production cutbacks and says meeting demand won’t happen until 2011. The DMCA was updated early in the week and ruled that jailbreaking and unlocking of smartphones like the iPhone was legal under fair use. This may bring the unlocking firms that are underground into the limelight.

Motorola Droid Upgrading to Android 2.2 Next Week
We had actually heard rumors that the original Droid would be updated to Froyo at the end of July, so this isn’t all that far from the case. And, while the HTC EVO 4G is getting updated to the same version number on August 3rd, we expect the roll out for the original Droid to happen right around the same time. There’s no exact date, but considering the competition, we wouldn’t be surprised.
So, we’ve got confirmation from HTC, Samsung, and now Motorola that existing devices in the market right now are getting updated to 2.2. This is great news for all the Android fans out there, especially those who have been waiting patiently for their official upgrade. Now, the Motorola Droid X is next on the list — so hopefully that happens before the end of the month of August. Any word on that, Motorola?
We’ll just go ahead and say it: Android 2.2 is just about to be on everything. And it looks like, unlike the previous updates to the Android version, every major carrier and manufacturer out there is taking the update to Android 2.2, or Froyo, very seriously. And that’s perfectly fine with us. This time around, we’ve got official word from Verizon that the Motorola Droid is getting updated to Android 2.2 next week.

Traffic to Nokia and BlackBerry Sites is Down
A recent story published in the NYT painted a bleak picture of the future for smartphone makers Nokia and RIM, the developers of BlackBerry.
R.I.M.’s share of the American smartphone market fell to 41 percent in the first quarter from 55 percent in the previous year, according to Gartner. The combined share held by [Apple] iPhones and [Google] Android handsets rose to 49 percent, from 23 percent over the same period.
R.I.M.’s sales have been increasing outside the U.S. but the report attributes that rise to the sharp fall in the price of BlackBerry handsets. Here are the latest numbers (U.S. only) from Comscore.

HTC phone featuring Windows Phone 7 finally appears, meets expectations. Sense coming eventually?
We’ve been hearing about the code-names for awhile and now we finally get to see one. We’re of course talking about Windows Phone 7 on an HTC device and this one is reportedly for Verizon (and presumably Sprint).
Rocking some current-high end specs, the device features:
* 3.7″ SLCD screen (Sony’s ‘Super TFT LCD’, nothing big)
* 3 touch-sensitive lower buttons (similar to EVO)
* 8MP camera (No dual flash, not even a single one!)
* 1GHz Snapdragon
* No HTC customizations in sight

Too early to tell if this will be a release device, what it’ll be called and where it fits in with HTC’s planned offerings (maybe this is an entry level device, not their flagship?)
Our take: it’s exactly what we’d expect from HTC and in that regard, it’s a bit underwhelming although we think it’ll get the job done admirably. Still, we’re sort of hoping for ‘an HTC EVO moment’ where we really go ‘wow‘ instead of ‘meh‘.
Are our standards and expectations too high? Yup, and we’re okay with that as Microsoft needs to wow us. Your thoughts? Is that Dell Lightning looking better yet? Continuar leyendo «HTC phone featuring Windows Phone 7 finally appears, meets expectations. Sense coming eventually?»
