Microsoft claims Gmail is invading your privacy, makes plea to use Outlook.com

Microsoft claims Gmail is invading your privacy, makes plea to use Outlook.com

Microsoft really wants its Outlook.com email app to pick up new users. Its solution? Attack the hell out of Google’s incredibly popular Gmail service.

via Sean Ludwig | Venturebeat.com

In November, Microsoft tried to go after Google’s credibility by claiming that Google Shopping results were all advertisements rather than fair comparisons of products around the web. Now it appears Microsoft is going after an even meatier target than Google Shopping by attacking Gmail.

The new Scroogled.com site from Microsoft makes the case that Gmail snoops on all of your emails to serve you better ads.

“Google goes through every Gmail that’s sent or received, looking for keywords so they can target Gmail users with paid ads,” the site claims. “And there’s no way to opt out of this invasion of your privacy.”

Some of what Microsoft is saying is true. Google does scan email keywords so it can contextually serve you advertising. However, it is clearly lying when it says there is no way opt out. As Marketing Land points out, you can not have Google reading your emails by using the basic HTML version of Gmail, using a third-party email client, or paying $50 a year for Google Apps and opting out that way.

Tablets and smartphones drive e-Commerce in Asia: Visa

SINGAPORE – The growth of smartphones and tablets, along with an improved perception of security is leading the internet to play a significantly bigger role in consumption across Asia, according to a recent study published by Visa.

Tablets and smartphones drive e-Commerce in Asia: Visa

Improved security perception is leading consumers to purchase online, according to Visa

In economies where smartphone and tablet penetration are high, consumers are already showing a tendency of picking up products through their phones or tablets. Of the 8,000 consumers surveyed, four in ten said they browsed products on their phones or tablet device last year. In fact, browsing on mobile phones exceeded 40 per cent in Korea, Hong Kong and Singapore. Hong Kong saw 13 per cent of its online purchases on mobile phones and 11 per cent on tablets.

“The prevalence of smartphones and tablets translates to easier online access for consumers to retailers anytime, anywhere, and we expect to see more people browsing and shopping on-the-go as a result,” said Paul Jung, Visa’s head of e-Commerce solutions for Asia, Central Europe, Middle East and Africa.

How to Choose the Best WordPress Hosting

 by

Two of the most important things for a web developer to consider is the web hosting company they will use and the type of hosting package they will choose. There are a lot of options and unfortunately, not all of them are right for hosting a WordPress website.

WordPress Specifics

There are a few things that are required in order to effectively run WordPress on a web hosting account. However, there are a few specifics that must be adhered to in order to run the latest versions of WordPress.

  • PHP – Version 5.2.4 or greater.
  • MySQL – Version 5.0 or greater.

Most web hosting companies not only support WordPress and its requirements, but there are many that will install the latest version for you on your server as a part of your set-up service at no extra charge.

Using Outlook.com with your own Web Domain | labnol.org

Technology Blog

How do you setup the new Outlook mail service on a custom web domain so that your email address reads like you@yourdomain.com instead of you@outlook.com?

If you are on Google Apps, you can leave your existing setup untouched and access your Gmail account from inside Outlook.com via POP3. This is a recommended option if you are just experimenting with Outlook and aren’t ready to make the complete switch to Outlook (see: Gmail vs Outlook).

The disadvantage with the above approach is that your incoming mails won’t be delivered to your Outlook mailbox instantly. They’ll first land in your Gmail inbox, Outlook will issue a fetch request after a minute or two and only then will your messages show up in Outlook.

Alternatively, you can remove Gmail from the loop and let Outlook.com handle all your incoming and outgoing email traffic. Here’s how you do that in five easy steps.

Microsoft previews new Metro website

Microsoft has released a preview of a new Metro version of its website. The new website features a streamlined look, including Metro-style tiles, large text and an easier navigation options.ms11111

The tiles and large text will likely appeal to users with touchscreen devices, as links will now be easier to select without zooming in. Microsoft had previously redesigned its website to its current look featuring Metro-style tiles last January, although the current site lacks large text for more touch-friendly navigation. Users can provide Microsoft with feedback on the new design by visiting the preview and clicking the scrolling “Feedback” button on the right side of the page.

Microsoft is also expected to launch a Metro-style redesign of its Hotmail service later this year. As with the new Microsoft.com homepage, the new Hotmail will appeal to both desktop- and touch-based users with its new design. Additionally…, Leer más “Microsoft previews new Metro website”

Hotmail also announced it will use new engagement metrics that filter based on how actively a user interacts with messages from specific senders.

Email UI Faceoff – GMail vs Hotmail vs Yahoo – The results

Welcome back to part two of our email UI faceoff – I recently wrote about the usability testing process, and set up a test for comparing the usability of Yahoo! Mail, Hotmail and Gmail.

Well, the results are in and we’ve got some pretty interesting feedback from the test – you can get directly to the test results yourself, or read on for our analysis and verdict.

Over the days we’ve been running the test, we had north of 300 people take it, and we think the numbers are a pretty good sample. Based on our analytics data, I could see that we had participants from 64 different countries, and it took the average user 2:56 to take the test.

So what did we learn from all that? Read on and find out…
