Facebook in the real world – amazing case study

Each of the people with the bracelets were invited to swipe their bands at certain places to give a ‘Like’ to that particular product or activity. And they were also able to upload their own pictures to their Facebook profiles, where they were automatically tagged. Over 650 teenagers used the RFID bracelets over 3 days and over 35,000 ‘Likes’ were made. Pretty impressive, especially when you consider how many friends those people would have reached through their individual newsfeeds.

coca cola 200x200 Facebook in the real world amazing case studyIt’s a rare moment when I see something being done online and instantly want to try it out for one of our clients. This however, is a great example of integrating Facebook with your offline marketing activity in a completely new way that I would love to try! It comes from Coca Cola in India Israel. At their amusement park in India Israel, an annual event called Coca Cola Village,  they issued customers with an RFID (radio frequency identification) bracelet that contained their Facebook details. Check out what they did with it in the video below :

This is the kind of thing that really gets me excited. Seeing social technology being used in a completely new way, but importantly integrating with ‘real world’ activity. There’s nothing better for a brand than having hundreds of people running around actually ‘Liking’ all your content and sharing it with your friends. And because it’s something completely new for the user, they go around swiping everything in sight! Leer más “Facebook in the real world – amazing case study”

Is there a new measure of success for social media?

The difference between popularity and effectiveness

The findings of this survey have to be taken in context. This was not looking at which companies worldwide are the most social, but using the indicator of the Fortune 40 companies that are listed as the most admired. So how does that admiration translate in social terms? While there are some companies in the top 10 of that list that fully deserve their place – such as Disney and Coca-Cola, others are more surprising, such as Apple and Google. Were I to think of the top social companies, these certainly wouldn’t be in my top 10. That’s where the difficulty comes for what is actually effective, and what is perceived to be effective. Because the whole of Twitter is talking about Apple, does that mean their social media strategy is effective, or that in fact that are an incredibly popular company that is talked about by default, rather than engaging with these conversations directly?

measuring success Is there a new measure of success for social media?Well according to the Huffington Post and APCO – there is. A recent study by the two organisations – Social EQ – sought to rank the Fortune 40’s top admired companies, in terms of the effectiveness of their social media strategies. The results (shown below) might be surprising, which begs the question of whether this really is an accurate measure of success in social media. To give some context to the study, it was run by working with a group of Social Informants (avid users of social media inside and out) who identified 6 key factors of social media success : dialogue ; customer service ; quality of content ; platform diversity ; engagement & interaction ; optimisation. Then a larger group of over 4,000 people were surveyed, to rank the 40 companies according to these factors. The graphic below shows the rankings :

How to Create Custom Facebook Pages

All the big brands like Coke, Starbucks, Nokia, and even Apple, maintain fan pages on Facebook that are “liked” by millions of people worldwide. These pages are designed professionally and have certain useful features.

For instance, the Apple iTunes page lets you search for apps right inside Facebook. In the case of Threadless, you can comment on your favorite T-Shirt designs without leaving Facebook while CNN has all the breaking news stories listed on its Facebook landing page.

How do they create such interesting Facebook pages? Do you really need to hire designers or skilled programmers who understand the ins-and-outs of Facebook APIs in order to build interactive and beautiful fan pages? Well, the answer is no.

Use of Geosocial Services is Underwhelming — for Now

Based on a Pew Internet survey released this morning, only 4 percent of American adults who go online on a regular basis are using any form of geosocial or location-based services like Foursquare. And on any given day, only 1 percent of internet users are taking advantage of these services. To complete the survey, Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project, based in Washington, D.C., contacted 3,001 ages 18 and older between Aug. 9 and Sept. 13, 2010.

Not surprisingly, the report shows that those who are in the habit of sharing their immediate location with their friends — or “checking in” with acquaintances who might be in the immediate neighborhood — are more likely to be young and mobile adults between the ages of 18 and 29. These geosocial gadflies who go online with their mobile phones use a location-based service like Foursquare or Gowalla, according to the study.

But perhaps we should take a second to describe the geosocial service to those who might be unfamiliar with the concept. Location-based services, which run on standalone software applications, or “apps,” permit users of smartphones and other mobile devices to notify friends when the user is nearby

How Many People on Facebook will be Interested in my business?

Location – use this to select where you would like your audience to live, you can narrow it down to city if you want to, as you do this you will see the figure in the “estimated reach” box on the right change. The estimated reach is the number of people that Facebook estimate will see your ad based on the details that they have in their personal profile.

Demographics – This is about how old your audience are and what gender, again as you change this the estimated reach will change.

Likes & Interests – These are what people have written in their personal profiles that they like/are interested in, so not pages on Facebook, but genuine things that they are interested in. You can add as many as you want here and see the estimated reach change. Each time you add an interest a drop down box will appear with options to choose from, if what you want isn’t there it means that no one has that listed in their profile. As you add more interests the estimated reach will change, and you will end up with an idea of the size of the market.

Using Facebook ad’s in this way you are not actually creating an ad, nor is it costing you any money, but instead you are researching. It is important to do this before you start a Facebook page, as it gives you a good indication of whether your audience is using Facebook and if they are roughly how many you can target – remember that there may be more people interested in your product/service than you find on here, they just haven’t listed it in their profile.

Good morning, Social Rabbit here with your guide to the world of social media.

The easiest way to see what people have put in their interests in their personal profiles, and therefore how many people could potentially be interested in your product or service, is to use the Facebook ad’s setup.

To get to the Facebook ad’s setup you can get there a few ways
a)      Go to your page and click on “promote my page with an ad” underneath your profile picture
b)      Go to www.Facebook.com/advertising
c)      Click on “ads & pages” in the left menu when you are looking at your personal newsfeed

Once you are in the Facebook ad’s you need to click on the green box which says “create an ad”.   Then scroll down the page until you are at section 2 on Targeting, as below:
