How would be the future if the present were design thinking?

Clarify the analytical thinking and design

According to Roger Martin, AG Lafley when he was CEO of P&G always made a great effort to explain their thinking. Be transparent “with his logic”, gave those who are below, in the hierarchy of Lafley, the guidance they need to one day succeed him, and to organize all the chances to keep its trajectory.

This is certainly not the posture of many of the leaders of organizations and companies, especially if we consider the financial areas.

Roger Martin considers that integrative thinking should be a key discipline of management. Design thinking is the application of integrative thinking.

However, there are still a large number of designers who would like design to be an art, and are really offended by the concept of design thinking. Martin said: “I had several nasty notes saying,” you’re not a designer, you are not trained in design, how dare to talk about it? “

Firstly it is easy to see that there are not only silos in organizations, where everyone learns well their model and closes in their habitat, without concern for clarify their thinking and its intention to management, but also in designers who hid behind a search of a path that does not converge to the business.

Integrative thinking often arises as a discomfort for both managers and designers when it comes to creating a model that is neither A nor B but can be a new created from the design and business processes.

For example, when speaking to clarify the thought of a manager of a financial area, surely we aren’t waiting for behaviors that are identical to those of AG Lafley, although this was desirable.

Rethinking the Role of Human Resources – Design Thinking

Recognize and reward creativity

“Fortunately, companies can now prepare itself for the changed dynamics of hiring that lie ahead. All you have to do is stop acting like big companies bureaucratic and impersonal, and begin to create a fast moving and a vibrant atmosphere. Companies will need to mimic the rise in small businesses and provide entrepreneurial initiatives as a natural thing. Teams will be smaller, flatter organizations , and the values of honesty , informality and innovation should be introduced into the culture. People will need to feel that what they say matters, regardless of the classification and title. Perhaps most important, is that organizations need to understand that when the recovery comes, the stars will no longer wait around for them to be given the authority to make decisions or to be promoted. The alternative of running your own show has a very strong appeal. “- Jack Welsh – Business Week

It’s a warning to all those responsible for Human Resources, which has long been filling his professional life , not just with pictures of discouragement produced by a culture that has always favored the to be rewarded for doing well what was established and never rewarded creativity.

The Human Resources as part of the organizations have been looking at and have been left looking like weak elements in the chain of organizational values.

People involved in the traditional Human Resources feel confronted with more fluid business environments with multiple implications of evaluations, awards and contracts.

HR’s Strategic Role in Innovation by Deb Mills-Scofield

Historically, HR has not played a very strategic role in innovation. This needs to change. HR needs to support the culture change to enable innovation; and the upcoming generation isn’t going to settle for an ‘administrative-only’ role.

On happiness and value innovation by JORGE BARBA

I’ve been thinking about and pounding you in this blog with the idea of not wasting people’s time (also see here). I found out two things today, one is that I’m not the only one thinking about it and second that recent research says that in order for people to be happy we like to spend a certain amount of time on some activities.

Why smaller companies should embrace open innovation by Stefan Lindegaard

Open innovation at small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) presents both great opportunities and great challenges. Forming open innovation relationships can give a growing enterprise access to resources that might normally are beyond their reach with the potential for greatly speeding up time to market.

Will SME feed the large companies in Open Innovation ?

Por jabaldaia

A Portuguese case

Small and medium enterprises, around the world are the drivers of global technological innovation and economic development.

It is likely that its importance has been obscured by the shadow of large multinational companies. In fact the news and exchange of opinion almost always fall into the issues of concern to companies like Microsoft, Apple and IBM among others.

If we imagine that these companies with the size of IBM are large trees in a dense forest, you’ll find around them small businesses that feed and make possible the majestic visibility of companies like Apple or Microsoft.

Are small and medium-sized plants that remain alive and strong the big trees!

These ecosystems are a good analogy with the open innovation with regard to the participation of each firm in the innovation process of a product or service.

SMEs embrace open innovation mainly for reasons related to the market, such as answering customer requirements (often large companies) or to remain in competition with competitors.

To live in an environment of unequal size SMEs face challenges as the most important challenges organizational and cultural issues. These challenges are a consequence of having to deal with the increase of external contacts.

Open innovation can be seen from several perspectives that are based on a combination of absorption and transfer of knowledge and / or technology.

– Companies use licensing of intellectual property as a way of obtaining return.

– Companies set of co-development partnerships as a means to innovate the business model that allows increasing the innovation performance in business.

– Companies establish cooperation with scientific and technological system. This connection enables the research undertaken in universities and institutes of R & D meets the industrial requirements, allowing the expertise of each entity and hence generate returns for both parties.

Do not wait for the generation y! Become a design thinker!

Profound insights

Most companies have had their lives guided by the principles of maximizing of the existing as the best way to get the maximum profit. Their leaders have no concern with what is valid and reject the possibility to take the risk by establishing a dialogue to reach a decision.

Thus these companies will never be able to deliver to the user or consumer products under the brand “Wow!”

Here are three assumptions to develop a response according to Gary Hamel- “W

The stance for doing business – Design Thinking

Applications of Design Thinking

Design thinking is the common expression to describe an interdisciplinary approach to solving problems, which transports us to the true innovation.
Interdisciplinary design thinking is especially important to decide what to do in the first place, so that the power of creative intuitive processes can be used to stimulate innovation, solve any problems and develop new opportunities.

The design thinking can help with the confusing and challenging problems posed by the complexity of the contexts of design in the world of digital technology and global connectivity.

Problems of complex projects such as systems or services, are best addressed by a team of people from varied backgrounds, using intuitive process, but adding to the output of the shared mind is more productive than the sum of individual contributions.
People from non-design disciplines also contribute to the projects , usually those with business and brand background , as well as writers, storytellers , and developers of prototypes.

– How we do business?

Unlike analytical thinking, design thinking is a creative process based on the construction, from scratch, from ideas. There are no judgments or fear of failure.

Do stupid questions! Remember that only other people call them so.

Make hope visible. There are so many people waiting for your ideas!

Make a lateral thinking man. Dig deep.

Work the metaphor and analogies.

Jump the fence, draw what you want and face the consequences.

Embrace constraints and draw anywhere.

Draw in emergencies, even if you have only one napkin.

And above all use empathy with dedication to really watch and pay attention to people, because this is usually the best way to check the depth of unarticulated needs.

Conflicts, storytelling and design thinking

Por jabaldaia

Observing conflicts to leverage new ideas on design thinking

It seems trivial to create something from a conflict, but if the aim is to create something new and that solves a problem no longer seems so banal.

The same conflict can be observed by different people with different results according to the environments or contexts.

We Observe conflicts in meeting rooms to set company strategy or in the operating room of a hospital by the divergence of views regarding the best procedure or in the next room, in the same hospital for a diagnosis to a child.

GE can help us to think a little about the use of observation of the conflict to find solutions to various problems. But GE is not alone, is also with the assistance of design thinking.

For GE, the design process begins not from the standpoint of engineering, but gaining a deep understanding of people who will interact with the equipment. They do not leave from ideas they begin from unmet needs.

Design Thinking – Tools to talk with business

Think design and Tools

The world is turbulent and things seem unexpected. Hence we feel the need to sit around a campfire conceptual and exchange stories. This ancient technology of storytelling reappears again to help solve problems.

Tim Brown says that the two main tools of design thinking are the prototypes (which produce ideas fast enough to fail and learn) and storytelling (things to be deployed with the sale of compelling narratives).
