Por Rachel Emma Silverman | The Wall Street Journal Americas

Ten Tips To Choose The Right Color Palette For Your Designs

1. Know the project and the client

You should keep in mind to choose colors that are suitable for your project. In addition to the colors given by your client, you have to make a great palette by adding other shades and tones. Different color combinations have different meanings. For example, green and red for Christmas and blue and red for patriotism.

2. Color theory review

Reviewing color basics is must before choosing and creating a palette. You can find various color schemes on the color wheel such as analogous, monochromatic, triadic, complementary, double-complementary, and split-complementary. Traditional color schemes can help you in determining the right color combination.

3. Try out custom color schemes

You can customize by making your own color palette from the traditional scheme where you needn’t follow the formal rules. Chroma, value, and saturation of colors are important.

4. As basis, use monochromatic color scheme

The One Thing Most Social Media Marketers Forget [Plus Infographic]

Christmas only comes once a year and it is fun to see the children tear off the paper and unwrap their presents.

It is more like a destruction derby than a party! Paper, string and wrapping fly in all directions as the journey of toy discovery unfolds. The One Thing Most Social Media Marketers Forget [Plus Infographic]

Parents and grandparents watch the unfolding scenario like the Super Bowl or the Football World Cup, cheering from the sidelines.

The Christmas card and the “thank you” is often forgotten and the focus is on discovering what exciting new present that Santa has delivered!

The toy is seized with shouts of glee and overt unbridled enthusiasm and for the next 10 minutes it is the centre of attention.

Soon the next toy is unwrapped and the now “old” toy is discarded, maybe to never be used again.
The Shiny New Toy Effect

Social media marketing is the “shiny new toy” and it has been unwrapped and it has us all enthralled and excited. The Facebook marketing, Twitter tweeting and YouTube videos have us running in all directions as we play with the social networks trying to work out how to make it all work effectively.

Amongst all the social media glitter there is a one little marketing tool that should not be forgotten, in fact it should be embraced and integrated into the new social web.

Simple Yet Effective Brainstorming Tips for Freelancers

Great ideas are born in everyone’s mind, it takes careful planning and powerful execution to turn them into reality. Here brainstorming enters, it is the process by which you squeeze out all ideas you can think of and from there you piece them together to come up with a plan.

The human mind is so strong that it can conceive even the seemingly impossible. No software has ever come close to the mind’s processing of creative ideas, its complexity, and fluidity. Besides, all of the wonderful structures we see both in the cyber world and the tangible world are a product human imagination and careful execution. Now let us talk about brainstorming in-depth and build things that will wow the audience.

Five Ways to Write Magnificent Copy

Most writing could be better.

Not just a little better — significantly better.

If you start out with a solid topic, a good knowledge of your audience, and a reasonable degree of writing ability, you’ll usually end up with a pretty good piece of writing.

But you don’t have to settle for “pretty good.” A little attention to the final details can kick “pretty good” to “magnificent.”

Whether you’re creating blog posts, special reports, sales letters, a video script, email autoresponders, or whatever else, you can take your writing up a level just by applying some simple principles…: [Más…]
1. Write drunk; edit sober

Now you don’t have to take this literally. I don’t really mean you should be downing rum as your fingers meander with increasing sluggishness and inaccuracy over your keyboard.

I’m looking at the principle behind this gem from Papa Hemingway. The principle which is absolutely vital to producing compelling copy that gets people reading and buying: you must sound real.

Persuasion is mostly a matter of education and building trust, and it’s hard to build trust when you write like a corporate drone.

Too many copywriters slip into an overly formal style because they think it makes them sound important. Bad idea. No one wants to read stiff, formal copy with all the personality of a fax machine.

Better to put too much personality in and have to edit it out later than not put enough in to begin with.

When you write, make sure you have some passion for your topic — and then just tell your reader what you want to say. Don’t self-consciously write. Just tell.

Enthusiasm creates reader involvement. Most writing has too little enthusiasm, not too much. But if you really feel you went off the deep end, you can always tone it down in the edit.

It’s hard to insert life into copy that never had any to begin with.
2. Sleep on it

If this isn’t the most important technique for improving copy, then it’s definitely in the top two after “learn to read and write.”

Simply put: You can improve any piece of writing by letting it sit overnight.

Look, I know you’re in a hurry. I know you’re really excited about what you just wrote. So am I.

I know you’re like a kid at Christmas and you just have to send it off right now to receive the praise and glory you absolutely deserve.

But don’t.

In the cold light of a new day, all writing seems slightly less marvelous and slightly more open to improvement.

With the perspective that a night away from writing will give you, you’ll see that what you thought was a flawless masterpiece could actually do with a tweak here and a sharp cut there. The changes you make at this stage are 80% of what you need to turn good copy into magnificent copy.

55 Ways to Relax After Work

Do you ever feel like a zombie after a long day at work? You feel so depleted and tired. You hardly have any energy left at all. The only thing you want to do is eat comfort food, pop open a brewski and watch television until bedtime.

We’ve all been there. Zoning out in front of the TV can be a great way to relax, but more often than not, it just makes you feel even more useless. Sitting immobile on the couch for extended periods of time can reinforce your own sense of helplessness and exhaustion, especially if it becomes your regular evening routine.

Although it can be difficult to rally enough energy after a tough day, sometimes the best thing you can do for yourself is to get off the couch, turn off the TV and find something better to do (sorry to sound so much like your mother, but she was right). TEDGLOBAL / WHERE IDEAS MEET & MATE

Fresh from Oxford, Contagious’ co-founder Paul Kemp-Robertson offers his perspective on the world’s most intense conference experience…

It’s not always easy being an Adland native in the crowd at a TED conference. If you haven’t saved the world or don’t own enough liquid capital to die trying, then the whoops that greeted this jibe from economist Tim Jackson can make you feel like a dumb jock who’s accidentally stumbled into the Chess Club Christmas party.

But maybe that’s just my insecurity and the nagging suspicion that my soul has been stress-fractured thanks to 20 years of commentating on the mechanics of mass consumption. When the biggest task you’ve recently completed is a speech on ‘advertising as a conversation’ and you’re suddenly surrounded by AIDS activists, women’s rights campaigners, MIT brainboxes and people who’ve spent their retirement fund building an eco-school in the middle of a jungle, it’s hard not to feel just a teeny bit marginalised and shallow. But then, I guess, such abrupt introspection is actually part of the value of TED. The compressed intellectual energy of the 18-minute speeches certainly dragged this editor out of his corporate cocoon and berated and beguiled him in equal measure.
