15 Things You Must Do When Changing WordPress Themes

The best thing about WordPress is that there are thousands of themes for customizing your blog. WordPress offers great flexibility. New themes are being created daily with many highly customizable free WordPress themes made available. The theme is actually just like a skin for the weblog. The overall look and presentation is also changed. The theme makes changes to the way you display the site but does not make changes to the basic software of the site.

Things You Must Do When Changing WordPress Themes

When you change themes, sometimes the new theme is not able to display the widgets well. This is not such a big problem in the case of standard widgets, such as Archives and Pages. But, you might have painstakingly created several customized scripts and hand written codes having hand-entered parameters. How can you prevent such a disaster from happening while changing your WordPress theme? You need to take care of some aspects while changing the theme to avoid this problem.

WordPress is 10 years old today: Here’s how it’s changed the Web – thnxz @TheNextWeb

WordPress, the blogging and content management system, is 10-years old today.

The platform has evolved in the past decade from being a basic blogging service to something that has helped people and brands become more social and changed how we communicate on the Web.

157762876 520x370 WordPress is 10 years old today: Heres how its changed the Web
By

Started by Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little, WordPress is an open source service where anyone can make modifications to the code to improve their blog and make it something that works for them.

Bloggers who use WordPress are able to apply design themes to their sites while also integrating third-party plugins easily. Since it’s open source software, there isn’t a need for an approval process before someone can implement a new feature.

As of this writing, the latest version of WordPress has been downloaded more than 21 million times.

Has it already been a decade?

For Mullenweg, hitting the decade mark was a bit startling for him. In a blog post, he waxed nostalgia about the platform he helped create:

Has it really been 10 years? It seems just yesterday we were playing around on my blog, and the blogs of a few high school friends. Two of those friends are married, one isn’t anymore, two are still figuring things out, and one has passed away.

You were cute before you became beautiful. Wearing black and white, afraid of color, trying to be so unassuming. I know you got jealous when I wore those Blogger t-shirts. They were the cool kids at SxSW and I thought maybe you could grow up to be like them.

You wouldn’t have shirts of your own for a few more years. We didn’t know what we were doing when we made them and the logo printed ginormous. People called them the Superman shirt and made fun of them. But, oh, that logo — the curves fit you so well.

WordPress emerged onto the scene when users had the option of posting their thoughts on services like XangaLiveJournalMySpace, and Blogger. One difference between all of these other systems and WordPress was the option for users to simply download the platform and install it right onto their own servers. With this self-hosted model, Mullenweg managed to help make it more accessible and flexible for not only users, but for businesses who wanted more control.

Content marketing deserves a prominent place in your business operations

We know how important it is for small businesses to create killer content. For many small business owners, however, the idea of content creation is a daunting one. And why not? Blogging isn’t always easy, especially if you don’t have the manpower or in-house talent to help craft your content. When times are tough for small businesses and money is tight, allocating resources to content creation doesn’t necessarily seem like the smartest move, does it?
With this sort of mentality, it’s easy to let content marketing slide on your list of priorities. It may be more appropriate to think of a business’ content as an entity that does most of its work “behind the scenes.” While an article or two every few months won’t rake in the dough for the average small business, a steady stream of blogs and articles will develop a flux of new visitors and increased web traffic; such traffic ultimately leads to, well, leads.
Still, many skeptics continue to see the benefits of content marketing as somewhat of a fairytale. Where’s the proof? What’s the point? Where are the numbers?
The numbers do indeed exist, and here are some points for starters:
  • 91% of business-to-business marketers are now using content marketing.
  • Businesses that blog actively generate 67% more leads per month versus those that don’t.
  • 79% of businesses are using content marketing for brand awareness, 74% for customer acquisition and 71% for lead generation.
What can we take away from such statistics?
  • Nearly every business today is taking part in some form of business blogging or content creation.
  • The more a business blogs, the more likely they are to create new leads.
  • Businesses are creating content for multiple purposes, not just to draw in leads or sell a product.
In short, most businesses are blogging and they’re seeing results. If your business isn’t blogging, chances are that you’re part of the minority. Furthermore, there’s a good chance that your competitors are creating content and therefore leaving your business a step behind.
There’s plenty we can take away from 2012 in terms of content marketing that will put small businesses on the right foot heading into 2013. Whether your business has already developed a content marketing strategy or you’re just getting started, take the following four tips into consideration. The marketing world is one which changes rapidly; staying ahead of the curve will help maximize your returns in terms of content creation.
Diversify Your Content

3 Insights From #TumblrCEO David Karp

Thinking Social / Value

#TumblrCEO David Karp visited Social@Ogilvy New York last week to share some of the key drivers of Tumblr’s explosive growth.

1. Keep Conversations Positive and Authentic

Karp believes, “Commenting is flawed. It slows conversation, and can be pernicious.”

As a result, Tumblr only offers users the ability to either reblog or “heart” content.  This strategy prevents negative comments and focuses user attention on a natural conversation flow, which helps explain why the average Tumblr blog receives an amazing nine (9) reblogs.

As a comparison, the industry average is 0.83 comments per blog post on other blogging services, says Karp.

Here’s an example of a creative illustration that has been reblogged almost 2,800 times.

2.  Celebrate the Artist …

According to Karp, “there are 150 million Tumblr users across the globe, 60% of the audience is currently international.”

However, what really stands out is how 75% of page views on Tumblr are from logged-in users.  The strategy of developing a community is clearly working.  People log in because they want credit for their creations and don’t want to be anonymous when they comment on other’s work.

As a comparison, YouTube is currently seeing approximately 1% of views that come from logged-in users.

3. The Secret Weapon

According to Karp, ‘Tumblr Radar is like your friend who says, “Hey, have you seen this yet?’”

As a result, “the Tumblr Radar is the most sought-after spot in our network” because it showcases the most creative and interesting media in the network.

From a reach perspective, the Tumblr radar generates over 120 million daily pages across mobile and desktop devices. Cream rises to the top, as the Tumblr Radar is only updated a few times a day with only the best content.

It helps raise the profile of our company, while keeping hundreds of thousands of people engaged and coming back to get the latest social media news. It feels like the blog is large and established, but we had to start somewhere too when we wrote our first post and nobody knew about the blog.

With all that in mind, we wanted to create a post that shares some of our thoughts and tips on creating a business blog that gets traction and that can help you attract new business. The good news is that most of the technology and tools that you will need are cheap and easy to use and with some quality content you will be well on your way. Here are 25 things that you can do that will help your own business blog massively.

Starting Off

Use WordPress
There is a vast number of free blogging sites like Blogger that will help you create one in seconds. However, the most popular blogging site out there has to be WordPress, thanks to its ease of use and range of styles. The scope for personalisation and design is vast, the dashboard is straightforward, and while you can pay for premium features, you can still create a clean and stylish site. When your business and site gains more prominence, you can start thinking about customising the design, but as a starting point, you won’t find any better.
Put Your Blog Front & Centre
Many businesses treat their blog as something that complement the main site, it’s nice to have one, but its use is limited. What you should do is make the blog the main feature of your site, so when people come to visit, they will see all the content you’ve been posting. Don’t bury your blog underneath your site as that defeats its purpose. Put it front and centre so you can show off your knowledge and generate more leads.

(optional)

Effective Tips for Tracking Social Media Trends

It is a fact that staying on top of the latest social media trends takes too much time. Also, most of us don’t have the time to do so effectively. After all, we’re busy with many other things like running our business or taking care of multiple SEO accounts.

So do you think tracking social media trends seems impossible?

Good thing is it’s still very possible. You just need to figure out an efficient way to keep track of social media trends. If this is one of your problems, here are the most effective ways to do it.

Use Flipboard

You can take care of tracking social media trends yourself and do it manually by spending a lot of time on your Facebook and Twitter account. However, if you want to avoid the problem of sorting through all the news and track social media trends easily, you can just use Flipboard.

A Flipboard is a magazine-style interface that can make the process a lot easier. According to social media experts, this is the future of social media trend spotting. Inbound Blog

Creating a blog for your business is one of the best ways to attract more customers.  As you blog, make sure you do not just talk about your business though.  You need to focus on creating content that your customers will naturally be interested in.

For example, if you own a plant nursery, then you would want to blog about topics such as: gardening tips, the best time to plant a new garden, how to get the most out of your plants and/or the best types of soil for different plant species.

This type of information is much more likely to be read by your potential customers.  And because they will actually read it, they will see that it is coming from your business.  It is a form of soft selling that is very effective.  The key is to blog regularly and provide valuable content to your audience.

If you wish to learn about creating a business blog, then you may want to follow these steps:

  • Buy a domain from a hosting website if your firm doesn’t have an official website.
  • Select the right kind of blogging platform
  • Develop marketing objections for your business
  • Choose a theme for your blog and get a template that will best fit in with your needs
  • Determine the number of blogs your firm will need
  • Find high quality writers who will be adding content for your blog
  • Plan how you will promote your blog and learn basic SEO tactics
  • Choose professional consultants who will help you achieve the best results with your blog.

Finally, remember that blogging is an art. Starting out is easy since there are many aids you can use at the initial stages. With time, you will get a grasp of things and be better at blogging. Only then should you start using it to promote your business.
