Music industry executives have been making an unusual pilgrimage to Coca-Cola’s (KO) Atlanta headquarters, a telling measure of the company’s successful World Cup soccer marketing blitz. They want to learn how Coke turned a song called Wavin’ Flag by a little-known Somali-Canadian hip-hop artist into a World Cup anthem and No. 1 iTunes hit in 17 countries in less than a year. «They are getting on planes from New York, from U.K., from Los Angeles,» says Joe Belliotti, Coke’s director of global entertainment. «Word of mouth is a great thing in the music industry.»

Visa transactions boosted by World Cup

Earlier this year Visa Europe launched an above-the-line campaign to promote its sponsorship of the World Cup, which followed the theme of Visa’s ‘Running Man’ spot.

It showed the journey of an overweight man, first seen watching football in his living room. As he runs, buying items using his contactless Visa card, he slowly loses weight, until he arrives at the game in an England-style white and blue kit.

Antonio Lucio, Chief Marketing Officer for Visa Inc said: «As a first time sponsor of the Fifa World Cup, we’re very happy with what this has done for our business.

«It has driven business growth – increasing transactions, building our brand and providing business development opportunities for our partners.»


Visa transactions by international visitors in South Africa during the 2010 Fifa World Cup were up 70% on average as the payments brand marked its first ever sponsorship of the football tournament.

Adidas ha multipicado por 20 sus ventas gracias a la camiseta de “la Roja”

Ser la marca deportiva que viste al equipo nacional ha sido todo un acierto y un gran negocio para Adidas. Antes de terminar el año ha multipicado por 20 sus ventas habituales en todo el mundo, mientras que antes de la Eurocopa la media anual no superaba las 50.000 e incluso tras ella el volumen alcanzado fue mucho menor que en este Mundial.

Las camisetas de “la Roja” se venden a 70 euros en los establecimientos comerciales y en muchos de ellos ya se encuentran agotadas. Adidas imprimió antes de la final 100.000 camisetas de una serie conmemorativa de la Selección, arriesgándose a que ésta perdiera. Sin embargo, no fue así y de hecho los jugadores las llevaron puestas en la celebración en Madrid.

Adidas lanza un viral para robar a Nike el premio a la bota goleadora

Adidas lanzó un viral creado por la agencia 180 Amsterdam, que pretende resaltar los goles marcados por lo jugadores que vestían uniformes de la marca, pero que omite el hecho de que los deportistas patrocinados por Nike marcaron más tantos.

El corto titulado “The goal counter” muestra a un chico africano obsesionado con llegar al mismo marcador de goles que los efectuados por los jugadores patrocinados por Adidas y su zapato deportivo F50.

De los 143 goles registrados en el Mundial de Sudáfrica, los jugadores de Nike marcaron 62, mientras que los de Adidas 61, Puma 9 y 11 tantos fueron registrados por otras marcas, aunque quedan en disputa 2 autogoles que las enseñas líderes se pelean.

Nike argumentó además que algunos de los jugadores de la escuadra española utilizaron calzado de su marca, a pesar de que el uniforme del equipo es de Adidas, incluyendo a Iniesta, que le dio el campeonato a “la Roja” con las botas CTR360 de Nike.

The top 10 soccer commercials ever made

In celebration of this Sunday’s World Cup final, we’ve put together our picks for the 10 best soccer commercials we’ve ever seen. Perhaps not surprisingly, the list is dominated by Nike (and Wieden + Kennedy), with Adidas’s soccer spots often seeming to fall a bit short. We left off most of the fluffy stuff (like every Pepsi soccer spot ever done) in favor of the meat and potatoes. The choice for No. 1 is contentious, naturally, so let us know your feelings in the comments section here. That’s also where you can berate us for the spots we left out.

Hyundai Continues to Drive U.S. Cup Buzz

fter chugging along with daily games for the first two weeks, World Cup matches have become much more infrequent during week three, as fewer teams remain in competition. Consequently, brands have not been able to maintain their initial buzz scores, according to market research firm YouGov’s BrandIndex report.

The Brandweek Buzz Report by YouGov is a weekly consumer perception report that analyzes the most talked about brands based on buzz: The scores are based on weighing positive and negative perceptions of a brand. A +100 score is positive, a -100 score is negative, and a rating of zero means that the score is neutral. YouGov interviews 5,000 people each weekday from a representative U.S. population sample. Respondents are drawn from an online panel of 1.5 million individuals.

The 10 Stadiums of the 2010 World Cup


As a good Brazilian I’m a soccer lover, and as everyone should know I’m also an admirer of good architecture. In this case, as we are getting closer to the World Cup in Africa, I decided to make a collection showing the beautiful stadiums that were built for this event, which is certainly one of the biggest sportis events in the world.

I can say I’m already starting my stock of popcorn and Coca-Cola (and a little beer) to watch the games and of course honor the architecture of the stadiums that should serve as inspiration to us Brazilians for 2014. Many were still unfinished in the photos (taken from the site FIFA ) but they give us a good idea of what we can expect in terms of comfort and technology.
