What is a ‘Backlink’ — and Why is it Important for SEO?

A majority of SEO techniques employed by websites, focus on increasing the number of backlinks by obtaining new inbound links from other sites. Building links has the effect of sending our websites direct traffic, while at the same time signalling Google that our website is important. The latter leads to increased crawl rate, and optimally increased rankings. In this article we examine the SEO basics of valuing a prospective link.

Risks Associate with Backlinks

Link building should be done with care. In spite of its potential to offer benefits, there are risks associated with backlinks. If your website links to untrusted, banned or sites with malicious code or vice versa, you could get into trouble with the search engines just for being associated with such sites via links. Similarly, too many reciprocal links where one website exchanges a link with another site purely for the purpose of increasing the number of links is also considered a bad practice by search engines such as Google. It is important to build backlinks as naturally as possible for best results and to avoid being penalised by search engines.

According to Wikipedia Backlinks, also known as inbound links, are incoming links to a website or web page. In basic link terminology, a backlink is any link received by a domain (web page or website) from another external website or domain.

The process of obtaining incoming links to your website is called link building or back-linking. Link building is an integral part of any SEO campaign.

The Importance of Backlinks

Back-linking is an essential component of an SEO or Internet marketing strategy. It is important for a number of reasons. Firstly, back-links are important for improving your rank on search engine results. All major search engines including Google, Yahoo and Bing take back-links into account when determining the rank of your website on search results.

Backlinks also contribute to the growth of your website and your business in other ways. Building links can bring direct traffic to your website from the sites that link to yours. Each incoming link whether it is from a blog comment, forum signature, social media profile or online directories, also offers extra exposure for your brand and directs visitors towards your website. How to Get More Comments on Your Blog?

Comments are very important feature on a blog. Comments promote reader engagement. It helps promote loyalty and establish a community around your blog. It also adds interactivity to your site and contributes to the web page content. This can in-turn provide a boos to your search engine ranking.

Do you want more comments on your blog? Here are some great ways to get more comments on your blog.
1. Have a Clear Comment Policy

Your comment policy offers an opportunity to inform readers about the benefits of commenting on your blog e.g. some blogs offer “do-follow” links in the comment which are very valuable for SEO backlinking. Some use plugins like Comment Luv or Top commentators offering improved visibility to those who comment. Others reply to every comment. Highlight any such benefit of commenting on your blog so readers understand the true benefits of participating in discussions.

2. Ask Reader to Comment

A study has found that explicitly asking your website visitors to “Please ReTweet” your content generates 4 times more ReTweets than without. The same applies to comments as well. Many bloggers have reported increase in comments by simply asking readers to comment typically at the end of the post.

The Difference Between Building Authority and Talking About Yourself

Your content actually demonstrates your expertise, compared with a website or bio page that claimsexpertise. This is a crucial distinction, because it truly levels the playing field and allows anyone to come along and build authority that outpaces even recognized and credentialed experts in a particular niche or field.”

The truth about authority perception by humans or machines is what people say about you is much more important than what you say about yourself!

How do you get people talking? Have a point of view and let people know through content you publish on and off of your webiste. Use a blog, articles, guest blogging, commenting, videos, podcasts…the list is endless.

The key is creating content now. Imagine, you have been working your entire adult life building your business and developing a great reputation. Then, some upstart comes into your market and starts publishing content, doing webinars, and suddenly, they are the perceived expert in your niche. Not fun…

We will have a webinar on this shortly….stay tuned.

I recently read a great report called Authority Rules by Brian Clark, the founder of Copyblogger. It’s a well written easy to read piece that outlines 10 rules to building authority for your business and persona.

Building authority in the new distributed web is critical to the success of your Internet marketing efforts. Let’s look at the definition of authority for a minute to better understand why:

au-thor-i-ty noun: [1] A citation (e.g. from a book) used in defense or support; [2] the source from which the citation is drawn; [3] and individual cited or appealed to as an expert.

On the web, the way Google and other search engines see authority is through links from other sites to your site. How influential are those other sites and how many of them link to your site also play a big part in your perceived authority by search engines. So this concept of building authority is very important because while you build authority on the web, other sites will be linking to your site and your business will win search engine rankings (SEO). It becomes self perpetuating…very cool if you can do it. Leer más “The Difference Between Building Authority and Talking About Yourself”
