by Tomas Hoffmann

Business & Money

In his new book Creative Intelligence, Bruce Nussbaum argues that creativity is an undervalued skill that anyone can cultivate. Not just for artists and musicians, he argues, creative intelligence — or CQ for short — is what separates the winners and losers of the business world as well. The author, a professor at Parsons The New School for Design in New York, recently spent a few minutes explaining how each of us can go about cultivating our own CQ.

What is creative intelligence?

Taking original ideas and scaling them into the creation of new products and services. I really believe that we are all born with a capacity to be creative, and we get it beat out of us in a lot of the schools that we go to. We have to relearn it, and it’s not that hard.

How can we be more creative?

Creativity is all…

But this is a good thing! When you hear that we need X number of jobs per month to keep up with population growth, it might give the impression that population growth is a burden to the economy — that if we could only slow the growth of the labor force we could solve our unemployment problems. But in fact the opposite is true: Steady population growth is a good thing for the economy. New entrants to the workforce don’t just supply labor, they also demand it. All these new young people and immigrants who are now joining the labor force need things like clothes to wear, cars to commute to work, and homes to live in. And this demand creates jobs. Furthermore, a growing population allows us to support our ever-growing elderly population.

In other words, it’s not the size of the labor force that’s the problem, but the lack of jobs.

Business & Money

Question: The monthly job reports are usually accompanied by a statement that we need lots of new jobs just to keep up with population growth. Since large numbers of baby boomers are now retiring, however, wouldn’t this have a complete offsetting effect for the next 15 years or so? Submitted by JohnnyOh

Answer: There are basically three variables that will determine the growth of the labor force: The fertility rate, the participation rate (how many people of working age want to work), and the rate of immigration. You are right that the aging of the baby-boom generation, coupled with declining fertility rates, has had a significant affect on the growth rate of the labor force. A report from the Labor Department last year predicted that the growth of the labor force will slow by 7% between the years 2010 and 2020 compared to the previous decade.

That being said, we still have a growing…

Construction work began in 2006, but is so complicated and rigorous that the end date of the construction project has been pushed back multiple times. The new tunnels are now expected to open in 2019.

U.S.

Far beneath the bustling streets of Manhattan, and out of sight for the majority of New York City’s 8 million residents, the largest transportation project in the country is churning away day and night hollowing out granite to create six miles of new tunnels.

It’s the biggest addition to New York’s public transportation system since the opening of Penn Station in 1910; a push to connect the Long Island Rail Road to Grand Central Terminal. When completed, 32,000 feet of new tunnels will have been excavated.

Thus far, all digging has been done by a pair of 22-foot long hard rock boring machines; to date, nearly 22,200 feet of tunnel has been cleared. Outside of Manhattan, two soft-ground tunnel boring machines will begin excavating 10,000 linear feet of tunnels in Queens to connect the 63rd street Tunnel to the existing LIRR tracks in Sunnyside. If you’ve never visited the Big Apple…

The most famous escape scheme was hatched in December of 1961 and culminated on June 11, 1962, when brothers John and Clarence Anglin followed fellow inmate Frank Morris through vents and vanished into the night, using life preservers and a six-by-fourteen foot raft fashioned from more than 50 raincoats.

Although inmate Allen West made the raft, life preservers and the wooden paddles for the escape, by the time he got the grill off of his cell vent and climbed to the roof, the others had already disappeared, leaving West behind to tell the story of these bank robbers-turned-escape artists.

In operation  from 1934 through 1963, the federal prison on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay was once considered the world’s most secure, holding notorious criminals like Al Capone, Robert “Birdman of Alcatraz” Stroud, George “Machine Gun” Kelly and James “Whitey” Bulger.

Over the years, 36 prisoners made more than a dozen escape attempts from The Rock. (Two men tried twice.) Twenty-three men were caught, a half-dozen were shot and killed, two were confirmed drowned and five are listed as missing and presumed drowned.
