This quick response barcode fruit label provides consumers with a wealth of information.

Malvasi Agostino, an Italian fruit producer, is adding QR code stickers to its baby watermelons called Cuoredolce, in an effort to provide consumers with more information about the product and encourage them to make more informed decisions.

These barcodes can be scanned with smartphones to discover more about the fruit (…)

The company is based in Poggio Rusco, whichis located in the Mantova, Italy area and produces a number of different watermelon varieties. It is the Cuoredolce baby watermelon that features the new QR code stickers, however. Against the green of the melon’s rind, these black and quite squares are made to stand out quite nicely, hanging below a bright red heart upon which the fruit’s name and the Italian flag are displayed.

The QR code stickers allow shoppers to find out what makes these melons different from other options.

When the code is scanned, they can discover that the Cuoredolce variety of watermelons have a sweet and refreshing flavor from their vibrantly red colored flesh. They each have a weight of between 1.5 and 2.5 kilograms (around 3 to 6 pounds). The rind is a marbled striping of light and dark green shades. The melons are packed in cartons of 10 kilograms, each containing 3, 4, 5, or 6 of the products.

The Cuoredolce melons are carefully positioned so that their stickers face upward in the fruit displays, encouraging consumers to inquire about the barcodes, or to actually scan them to learn more about the products.

This technique, using QR code stickers on fruit, is beginning to pop up in places all over the world. In this case, it directs people who scan it to the “Follow the Quality” website, which features a blog with further information. Many other fruit and vegetable growers and producers are also using this mobile commerce technology to give shoppers more information about themselves and their products, to illustrate how they stand out from the competition. Content often includes the history of farms, growing techniques, nutritional information about the products, and even recipes that use those ingredients.
