5 Traits That Will Lead You to Success

Some people just seem gifted. Somehow everything they do, they do well.
To the rest of us it seems like magic, we wish we had the same abilities.
Standing against the world
What is the difference between them and us?
Since I was little this “mystery” has intrigued me, when we were kids, some kids would just overnight become the best at the sports we played, they did well in classes, it felt as though they were in the top at whatever we did.

When I later started working I noticed the same thing. I started working in sales and some salesmen just had a gift. They would close everything. I had to know how and why. Since then I have studied good salesmen, poor salesmen, sports stars and other successful people like managers and business owners.

I have found that all successful people have 5 traits in common

1. Hunger
To succeed it takes hunger, a driving force pushing you to excel. It doesn’t make any difference what that force is; Money, Prestige or just the feel of Winning, as long as it is there and that it is powerful.

I have written a post about this earlier, see Hunger; The Key to Success

2. A thirst for knowledge
A need to know everything about your industry, your product, the competition and your customers so that you can feel prepared to react to any situation.

3. Pride
Showing pride in yourself, your appearance and your company is very important.
People can quickly see if you are someone they want to do business with. Being able to walk into a room and say, this is me and I am important! Makes others believe it to.

4. Discipline
Success is hard, tedious work. Every day you have to push yourself to accomplish your goals.
Being able to do it at a constantly high level takes a lot of discipline, constantly working on your techniques and skills takes iron will and a strong person.

If you want advice on how to become more disciplined read “What Would We Do Without Discipline?“

5. Confidence
Being able to go into a room with the CEO, 2 members of the board and a group of high level executives and make a presentation takes guts.
You must be able to stand up straight and say “This is me, this is what I can do and why you need me!”

Pride in your work and confidence in yourself go hand and hand, but you cannot do without either.

Improve on what you do worst
All of us have these traits, but in different degrees.
Only you know truly how confident you are in yourself, how proud you are, how well you are able to discipline yourself, how interested you are in knowing more about your industry and how hungry you are to succeed, but you need to be able to look at yourself and see what your weakest points are and start to work on their improvement.

This is a never ending challenge; you can always improve and always get better.

From my personal experience I can say that working on your weakest skill makes a large difference, not only in how well you do your job, but in your whole life. When you start looking at yourself objectively as if you were someone else, you learn so much about yourself and your start to grow.

I hope this article has inspired you to improve and helped you see what traits it is you need to work on if you are to become the best.

  1. I don’t know if I could think of 5 better traits than what you have here. Each one is essential in business. A quick true story of two friends.

They were both out of work. ‘Jim’ had an office job and ‘Bill’ did some retail sales. Well ‘Bill’ didn’t want to work for anyone any more, he was sick of his bosses telling him what to do and the rude customers. He set the goal of owning his own business. ‘Jim’ had the same feeling. He was sick of Corporate America, sick of the rush hour traffic everyday, he too wanted to start his own business.

Day in and day out ‘Bill’ worked on setting up his business learning all he could. ‘Jim’ always asked to go to lunch and go out at night but ‘Bill’ stayed focused on his business. In several months ‘Bill’ actually had a nice income coming in and ‘Jim’, well he didn’t make it and had to get another job.

‘Bill’ now has a successful online business, bought a house on the water, etc. ‘Jim’ is still working at the office job but tells me all the time that he wishes he would have been more focused. Remember this is a true story…..

Great post though – it’s much appreciated!

    Thanks!
