Is the Web Dying? It Doesn’t Look That Way

ired The chart accompanying the Wired article shows Web traffic shrinking — as a proportion of total Internet traffic.

Is the Web dead?

Chris Anderson, Wired magazine’s editor in chief, says the Web is being crippled by a world of apps and screens in a cover story titled “The Web Is Dead. Long Live the Internet.”

Mr. Anderson argues that a world of downloadable apps, which work through the Internet and arrive through gadgets like the iPhone or Xbox, are quickly cannibalizing the World Wide Web as consumers prefer buttoned-up, dedicated platforms, designed specifically for mobile screens.

Is he right? Should we plaster R.I.P. signs all over the Web? Not exactly.

19 Reasons Why I Love Manchester City

Manchester City Understand Social Media

“I think this is due to how the club perceives itself within the footballing world. Some clubs may see themselves simply as a brand that exists separately from the day-to-day lives of their supporters and because there are no real direct revenue stream, do not see the value of social media.

For various reasons, others may feel that social media is not a worthwhile endeavour for them and somewhat of a minefield that is best steered clear of. At City we’re proud of the way that the club is able to reach out to supporters and we’re proud of the way the fans have reacted and embraced what we’re trying to do.

We’re also keen to ensure that the club remains at the forefront of new developments in the field of social media whilst it is imperative that the club’s soul, the very reason why people fall in love with Manchester City, is retained”.

A Free Utility to Backup all your Windows Drivers

When you buy a new PC, the vendor will almost always provide you with a “driver CD” that has the device drivers for all the hardware that’s inside your new machine. The CD comes handy when you are reinstalling Windows from scratch or are trying to recover your machine to its original state after, say, a system crash.

There are however two drawbacks with the driver CD.

Keyboard Shortcuts to Speed Up Typing on an iPhone or the iPad

The current breed of iDevices (iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad) share an almost similar on-screen virtual keyboard and therefore, you just have to master a common set of keyboard shortcuts to type a little faster on any these devices.

Let’s quickly recap the 10 most useful typing shortcuts for your iDevice:.

Tip #1: If you want to type special characters with accent marks (like the letter à or è), simply tap and hold the corresponding alphabet key for a while and it will pop-up a list of related accented characters for you to choose from. Don’t release the key before making a selection else the choice will disappear.

Tune In, Check In, Tune Out

A tweet from Sunday night: «@ johnmccrea oh come on, will all these apps merge already?! 🙂 and yes, giving it a try now.» It was a long day of checking in, and I was reaching my breaking point.

At the time, I was online checking out Comedy Central’s roast of David Hasselhoff. I heard there was some badge for it on Philo, one of a genre of entertainment check-in apps proliferating so rapidly that they bear a resemblance to the spread of cholera bacteria I’m reading about in the book «Ghost Map.» I checked in on Philo only to have my friend Somrat Niyogi of Bazaar Labs telling me his app Miso offered a Hasselhoff badge, which I duly earned. By the time John told me about Tunerfish, I was ready to check out. My mobile Internet connection went on the fritz or I would have had to visit TV.com’s Relay site too.

Old Spice Parodies Not Recommended For Political Campaigns

If you thought Cisco’s Old Spice copycat campaign was bad, just wait ‘til you see Daniel Freilich’s new Vermont Senatorial campaign video. The description of Freilich’s Old Spice campaign video says that the candidate is showing off his “fun side” with this parody clip, which has accrued over 17,000 views since it’s upload last week, most in the last twenty-four hours. But I’d be willing put money on the fact that most of these viewers are laughing at Freilich and not with him. Who thought it would be a good idea to parody a men’s deodorant campaign in a campaign for political office?

As I’m not from Vermont and haven’t been following their Senatorial race very carefully (OK, I haven’t been following it at all), I don’t know what kind of a candidate Freilich is or whether he has any chance of winning. However, what I do know is that in the past there hasn’t been any precedent of a political candidate winning based on a viral YouTube video.

5 Things Recruiters Should Stop Doing

First the good news: many companies are hiring again. Now the bad news: if your company is among them, you’re probably looking at too many requisitions and too few hands on deck to fill them. And, even if you’re not in that boat, you’re probably feeling the pressure to do more with less.

In either case, your team can benefit from persuading recruiters to eliminate the five time-wasters below. By streamlining their work, recruiters will have more time to focus on the most valuable aspects of the hiring process. The results will be:

* Better hiring decisions
* An improved candidate experience
* A more cost-effective approach to talent acquisition
