OLD SPICE / TALK TO OLD SPICE GUY

A marathon of personal addresses from Isaiah makes the web smell a little spicier

Fans of Old Spice’s Man Your Man Could Smell Like, aka actor Isaiah Mustafa, got a special treat yesterday as the man himself devoted a marathon number of rapid-fire video responses to admirers on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Reddit.

Offering advice, suggestions, support and even in one case a marriage proposal, Mustafa and a shock team of writers, uploaders and social network liaisons managed to dispatch a frighteningly large number of responses with very little delay, in one of the best examples of real-time, spontaneous marketing seen to date.

The effort kicked off with a widely-noticed get-well-soon message to Digg founder Kevin Rose and spread quickly, eventually reaching more Twitter bigs like Ashton Kutcher, Biz Stone of Twitter and Alyssa Milano. Celebrity and commoner alike graced with Mustafa’s pronouncements were compelled to share, extending the reach of the effort to networks of followers large and small. The team churned out some 117 videos in about twelve hours.

Topsy Expert Search helps you find topical experts on Twitter

Topsy, the third-party Twitter search engine, has launched Topsy Expert Search to help you find topical experts on Twitter.

It’s pretty straightforward – just type in a topic that you are interested and Topsy gives you a ranked list of “experts” – at least in the Twitter sense – on the topic you’re searching on. Best part is – it works pretty well, at least for the searches we did. For instance, we did one for “climbers” and a strong list of actual rock climbers showed up in the results. We also searched for “apple” (which of course could mean the company or the fruit) and again, a strong list of Apple experts showed up.

Not all searches, however, were exactly as we expected: for instance, we searched for “new york” and a bunch of sport team Twitter accounts showed up. Relevant, but not exactly the experts we were anticipating. Please let us know in the comments what you think.

Coming Soon: Sign Into Multiple Google Accounts in the Same Browser

Do you like this story?

If you use several Google accounts on a daily basis, you probably want to be logged into all of them at the same time, but to achieve that, you have to use several different browsers.

Now, according to Google Operating System, Google (Google) is testing a feature that will let users be logged into multiple Google accounts in the same web browser. Personally, I have at least four different Gmail (Gmail) accounts opened at all times, and this feature is very high on my wish list.

Judging from the screenshot below, Google services that are currently supported are Gmail, Reader, Sites, Calendar, Code and Docs. There is also one limitation: if you turn on multiple sign-in, you cannot use Gmail’s offline mode.

LOS 13 PECADOS DEL EMAIL MARKETING

2. No segmentar adecuadamente.

Healthy Living Goes Digital: Four Lessons for Brands

by Kelly Ferraro

For those of you into healthy living, you have likely witnessed the merger of your fitness and digital worlds. I am no exception.

On my Facebook newsfeed, my spin instructor friend has announced an open spot in her 6:30pm spin class. When I check Foursquare, I can see that my friend Mike just checked into the Whole Foods, and is still the mayor of the organic restaurant across the street. And even though I want to make an excuse to skip a yoga class, the Mind Body yoga app on my i-Phone shows me that there are still 74 yoga classes happening before the day is done. And not to mention the various Facebook posts from friends who are “hitting up the gym” or “out on a long run.”

In my digital world, signs of healthy living are inescapable.

Hence, the fitness and wellness crowd is a great example of using social media to communicate, collaborate, motivate, and create community in a landscape that might otherwise be occupied by silos.

But what does this mean for brands? The adoption of social media by the fitness and wellness worlds benefits businesses in at least four ways:

Action Method II: Keeping Projects Alive

Action Steps are the most important components of projects—the oxygen for keeping projects alive. No Action Steps, no action, no results. The actual outcome of any idea is dependent on the Actions Steps that are captured and then completed by you or delegated to someone else. Action Steps are to be revered and treated as sacred in any project.The more clear and concrete an Action Step is, the less friction you will encounter trying to do it. If an Action Step is vague or complicated, you will probably skip over it to others on your list that are more straightforward. To avoid this, start each Action Step with a verb:

* Call programmer to discuss . . .
* Install new software for . . .
* Research the possibility of . . .
* Mock up a sample of the . . .

Verbs help pull us into our Action Steps at first glance, efficiently indicating what type of action is required. For similar reasons, Action Steps should be kept short.

5 Web Files That Will Improve Your Website

The amount of code that developers encounter regularly is staggering. At any one time, a single site can make use of over five different web languages (i.e. MySQL, PHP, JavaScript, CSS, HTML).

There are a number of lesser-known and underused ways to enhance your site with a few simple but powerful files. This article aims to highlight five of these unsung heroes that can assist your site. They’re pretty easy to use and understand, and thus, can be great additions to the websites you deploy or currently run.
An Overview

Which files are we going to be examining (and producing)? Deciding which files to cover was certainly not an easy task for me, and there are many other files (such as .htaccess which we won’t cover) you can implement that can provide your website a boost.

The files I’ll talk about here were chosen for their usefulness as well as their ease of implementation. Maximum bang for our buck.

We’re going to cover robots.txt, favicon.ico, sitemap.xml, dublin.rdf and opensearch.xml. Their purposes range from helping search engines index your site accurately, to acting as usability and interoperability aids.

Let’s start with the most familiar one: robots.txt.

Mixing Type and Imagery: How to Manage a Controlled Collision

By setting images in type, you are able to express more than words or pictures can alone.

The effect packs a lot of information into a tight space. But it can get ugly if the text and imagery are at odds with each other.

Designers can steer clear of disaster by keeping their purpose in mind: expressing the idea clearly should trump the “wow” factor of the technique.

Setting images directly in text mixes the straightforward communication of words with the emotional effect of photos.

Words state, and photos express. But when images get lost or text becomes muddled, or both, we get conflict. Images and text can be harmonized seamlessly, but only if we follow some guidelines that balance the readability of both. Read on to find out how to effectively mix text and imagery.

The Job Post: Ad Agency Seeks Social Media Manager for Youth Brand

Nadine Cheung, our jobs correspondent regularly highlights great social media jobs in “The Job Post”.

Anomaly is on the hunt for a social media manager to monitor and curate fan conversations for one of its leading youth brands, and if you explain why you’re the best person for the job 140 characters or less, you may just be able to land yourself a new gig. While a regular cover letter will suffice, taking Anomaly’s tweet-sized synopsis challenge will score you major points and, with a little clever word power, could set you apart from all the rest.
