A fresh study conducted by Edison Research showed that despite the increment of Twitter awareness amongst Americans, only a minority uses it. 87% of Americans are aware of Twitter, which is higher than the population with access to the Internet; 85% of them, but only 7% of them are on Twitter, which are about 17 million people.
The 87% awareness level of Americans on Twitter is huge compared to only 5% back in 2008. Do take note that the statistics only includes Americans above the age of 12. However, Facebook’s awareness is only slightly higher than Twitter at 88%. Despite the almost equal awareness, 41% of Americans do maintain a profile page on Facebook.
This study presents three years of tracking data from a nationally representative telephone survey (via landline and mobile phone) of 1,753 Americans, and was conducted in February 2010. This report details new data on the awareness and usage of Twitter, along with user demographics, status updating behaviours, brand following activity and even an early look at location-based social networking.
Here are more additional statistics on Twitter from the study:
– Twitter users are more likely to live in higher income households
– Four in ten Twitter users (39%) own three or more computers
– Twitter users are 3 times more likely to follow brands on Twitter than other social networking sites
– Only 47% of regular Twitter users post updates
