Ahh, the season of love is approaching. Yes, Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. This day is originally reserved to celebrate love and affection between intimate companions. However, we should not just limit ourselves to that.

How about taking this opportunity to create a positive client relationship that can possibly last through the years? It’s about celebrating love; and the client relationship is something that needs to be strong for it to be successful.

1. Get to know your client, personally

This boils down to being personal and genuine about it. Do you know what your client likes to eat, drink? Their favourite sports team, TV show or actor/actress? It’s not necessary to know all of this to have a client relationship but, if you don’t, you’re missing out big time to create a long-lasting client relationship. You don’t need to be BFFs with your clients but the effort made beyond the day-to-day work to create a meaningful relationship, goes a long way.

Get to know the preferred method of communication between the client and you. Whether they prefer the phone, email, text messages, IM, Twitter or Facebook; you need to know. It may sound a little basic, but if you don’t know how to contact your client, you may spend hours trying to reach your client.

3. Be flexible

The backbone of any PR campaign would be planning. But, that doesn’t mean your plan must be set in stone; allow some room for change. There are bound to be slip ups, accept the fact and move on. Never be so rigid to the point that it’ll impact the client relationship. Of course, nobody wants that to happen.

4. Always be there

Attention to detail is probably the most important aspect of a client relationship. Be punctual, attentive and sincere. Just doing your job isn’t sufficient, make an effort beyond your tasks. Sometimes, being good at your job means you’re there when your clients needs to vent. Your skill of diplomatically showing understanding and concern can go a long way to build that lasting client relationship.
