Free Resources to Build Your Next WordPress Site – @sixrevisions

WordPress is a popular website publishing platform. What once was primarily a blogging system has now evolved into a flexible and robust CMS used by both small businesses and large corporations alike.

When working with clients, front-end developers are often expected to produce creative, cutting edge content in a very short period of time.

And beyond staying innovative, there can often be a lot of redundant coding and debugging which requires a careful, meticulous eye. Between managing client expectations and trying to produce well-designed sites in a reasonable amount of time, developers can really feel the pinch.

Fortunately, there is an immense amount of resources to help aid with WordPress development.

In this article, I’ve seeded through tons of stuff to bring you a list of my favorite free WordPress resources for designers and developers. From discovering inspiration to choosing the right WordPress theme framework, I hope you’ll find just what you need to kick start your next project.

4 Ways To Train Your Mind for Success – thnxz @pickthebrain

Your alarm goes off at 6 AM and immediately your to-do list flashes through your mind.  Before brushing your teeth you check your phone for important emails and updates.  While putting on your mascara your mind jumps ahead to your noon appointment.  At breakfast you rehearse what you are going to say, anticipate objections, and the entire meeting runs through your mind, over and over again. “It’s going to be a long day,” you think to yourself and it’s only 7:30 AM.  Sound familiar?

This kind of mental projection is time consuming, unproductive, and exhausting. But you can train yourself and your mind to be present, productive, and supportive with these four easy and effective Applied Meditation techniques.

The Top 30 Most Popular WordPress Plugins – Infographic

WordPress is the engine that drives over 150 million blogs on the World Wide Web. It is open source software that provides access for developers to create add on-ons (plugins) that increases its functionality for users with a few clicks. It was first released on May 27, 2003, by founders Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little. At last count there were over 22,000 plugins available to download.

What the Google SEO Guide Doesn’t Tell You Read more at

www.business2community.com

The Google SEO guide, better known as the Google Webmaster Guidelines, doesn’t really tell you anything about actual Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Instead it spreads a false idealism by telling you to just write great content. Don’t get me wrong here, the guide is educational but not really about SEO.

Great content is important—and it’s the number one thing most sites don’t do—but it won’t help you get your site to the top of the rankings in a Internet where everyone else is using SEO. Remember the article I wrote called “Content is Not the Only King“, you should make the effort to read this as it makes some serious sense. I agree that content is important but that is not all you need to rule the internet world. (evil laugh in the background)

So what else did Google forgot to mention in the Google SEO guide?

Choose Your Keywords Wisely

The choices you make early in your website’s life will affect it for years to come, so choose your keywords wisely. The Google SEO guide hardly addresses keywords at all, but the basic facts are clear.

1. Short keywords do better than long keywords because they match more possible search queries.

2. Small sites must be careful about choosing keywords used by larger sites because out ranking a larger site is difficult. (But it’s not impossible.)

3. Do your keyword research using free or paid tools before choosing any keyword. Make sure the keyword receives the amount of traffic appropriate to your site and try to find any related keywords you can also use.

4. Consider the long tail—infrequently-searched keywords which you can rank for very easily for guaranteed regular traffic.

My free E book about how to build a WordPress website shares some insights into keyword research also. It is a must read! Go to this page to access the download. No signup required. (password wwb)

Project Management in the WordPress Dashboard | wpmu.org

WordPress Tutorials, Themes, Plugins & More – WPMU.org

A good project management system lets you keep track of (and manage) projects within your organization. It lets you relate and assign tasks to contacts, set milestones and goals, and it provides an easy to use interface for messaging other members of your team.

Every organization has unique needs, which means no project management system is perfect for every situation, but the WP Project Manager plugin is a great place to start if you want to bring simple project management functionality into your WordPress Dashboard.

In this daily tip, we’ll give you a quick review of this new project management plugin and a few suggestions on how you can use it to add project management to WP.

WP Project Manager Organization

WP Project Manager is organized around 5 main tabs:
1. Activity
2. Messages
3. To Do List
4. Milestones
5. Files

The Activity screen shows all items posted to the project in the style of most social media streams. It’s a simple status update with links to the individual activity.

The Activity Tab in WP Project Manager shows all project updates system-wide.

Messages are where you post notes regarding the project. They can be related to project milestones, or aimed at specific users.

Messages tab is a graphical display of all project communications

The To Do List gives you the ability to create tasks related to your individual projects, which can also be assigned to specific users. Sigue leyendo

And if your WordPress blog is in any way image-driven, you have probably sought to leverage Pinterest as a traffic source. If not, you’re missing out. A Shareaholic studycarried out in July concluded that Pinterest is second only to Facebook amongst the social networks when it comes to sending referral traffic.

So it is fair to say that if you want to attract more traffic to your site, you should be making the most of Pinterest. Which brings me to the 14 plugins I am featuring today, each of which offer unique functionality which can help you drive more traffic to your site. Enjoy!

Alternatives To FeedBurner (And other useful FeedBurner resources)

The daily egg
by Sharon Hurley

Could FeedBurner be on its way out? While no-one knows for sure, Google’s announcements in the last year or so send a signal that something is changing.

With the FeedBurner API scheduled for shutdown this month and AdSense for Feeds on its way out by the end of the year, it’s definitely time to consider other RSS feed management options.

That’s not good news for the hundreds of thousands of bloggers and potentially millions of subscribers relying on this service.

13 Alternatives To FeedBurner

FeedBurner currently provides feed enhancement services (including analytics, podcast feed management, and more) as well as email subscription management.

It’s difficult to find a tool that replaces all the FeedBurner functions.

Here’s a list of the FeedBurner alternatives and the functionality they provide >>>  Sigue leyendo

Common WordPress Malware Infections – wp.smashingmagazine.com

Smashing Magazine

>By  | wp.smashingmagazine.com

WordPress security is serious business. Exploits of vulnerabilities in WordPress’ architecture have led to mass compromises of servers through cross-site contamination. WordPress’ extensibility increases its vulnerability; plugins and themes house flawed logic, loopholes, Easter eggs, backdoors and a slew of other issues. Firing up your computer to find that you’re supporting a random cause or selling Viagra can be devastating. WordPress Security

In WordPress’ core, all security issues are quickly addressed; the WordPress team is focused on strictly maintaining the integrity of the application. The same, however, cannot be said for all plugins and themes.

The focus of this post is not to add to the overwhelming number of WordPress security or WordPress hardening posts that you see floating around the Web. Rather, we’ll provide more context about the things you need to protect yourself from. What hacks are WordPress users particularly vulnerable to? How do they get in? What do they do to a WordPress website? In this lengthy article, we’ll cover backdoorsdrive-by downloadspharma hack and malicious redirects. Please notice that some anti-virus apps report this article as malware, probably because it contains examples of the code that should be avoided. This article does not contain any malware itself, so the alert must be based on heuristic analysis.

Over the past two years, Web malware has grown around 140%. At the same time, WordPress has exploded in popularity as a blogging platform and CMS, powering close to 17% of websites today. But that popularity comes at a price; it makes WordPress a target for Web-based malware. Why? Simple: its reach provides the opportunity for maximum impact. Sure, popularity is a good thing, but it also makes us WordPress users vulnerable.

(Smashing’s side note: Have you already bought the Smashing Book #3? The book introduces the latest practical techniques and a whole new mindset for progressive Web design. Get your book today!)

A Bit About Our Security Expert: Meet Tony

Lacking the technical knowledge needed to go into great depth, I brought on board a co-author to help me out. Bringing the technical information is Tony Perez, Chief Operations and Financial Officer of Sucuri Security. Sucuri Security provides detection, alerting and remediation services to combat Web-based malware. In other words, it works on websites that have been compromised. This means that Tony has the background, statistics and, most importantly, knowledge to go really in depth on malware issues that affect WordPress users.

I asked Tony how he got into Web security:

Tony

“I think it goes back to 2009. I was managing and architecting large-scale enterprise solutions for Department of Defense (DoD) clients and traveling the world. In the process, there was a little thing called compliance with the Security Technical Implementation Guide (STIG), set forth by the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA). I know, a mouthful, but it’s how we did things in the DoD; if it didn’t have an acronym, it didn’t belong.

That being said, it wasn’t until I joined Dre and Daniel at Sucuri Security, in early 2011, that I really began to get what I consider to be any resemblance of InfoSec chops.”

Armed with Tony’s technical knowledge, we’ll look at the main issues that affect WordPress users today. But before we get into details, let’s look at some of the reasons why WordPress users might be vulnerable.

What Makes WordPress Vulnerable?

Here’s the simple answer. Old versions of WordPress, along with theme and plugin vulnerabilities, multiplied by the CMS’ popularity, with the end user thrown into the mix, make for a vulnerable website.

Let’s break that down.

The first issue is outdated versions of WordPress. Whenever a new WordPress version is released, users get a nagging message, but plenty of users have gotten pretty good at ignoring the nag. Core vulnerabilities in themselves are rarely an issue. They do exist; proof can be found in the most recent 3.3.3 and 3.4.1 releases. WordPress’ core team has gotten pretty good at rolling out security patches quickly and efficiently, so the risk of exploitation is minimal, provided that WordPress users update their installation. This, unfortunately, is the crux of the problem:WordPress users ignore the message. And it’s not just inexperienced and casual WordPress users who aren’t updating. A recent high-profile hack was of the Reuters website, which was running version 3.1.1 instead of the current 3.4.1.

Vulnerabilities in plugins and themes is another issue. The WordPress repository has 20,000 plugins and is growing. The plugins are of varying quality; some of them inevitably have security loopholes, while others are outdated. On top of that, consider all of the themes and plugins outside of the repository, including commercial products that are distributed for free on Warez websites and come packed with malware. Google is our favorite search engine, but it’s not so hot for finding quality WordPress themes.

Then, there’s popularity. WordPress is popular, without a doubt. Around 700 million websites were recorded as using WordPress in May of this year. This popularity means that if a hacker can find a way into one WordPress website, they have potentially millions of websites for a playground. They don’t need to hack websites that use the current version of WordPress; they can scan for websites that use old insecure versions and hack those.

Finally and most significantly, the biggest obstacle facing WordPress users is themselves. Tony in his own words:

“For whatever reason, there is this perception among WordPress users that the hardest part of the job was paying someone to build the website and that once its built, that’s it, it’s done, no further action required. Maybe that was the case seven years ago, but not today.

WordPress’ ease of use is awesome, but I think it provides a false sense of assurances to end users and developers alike. I think, though, this perception is starting to change.”

Un blog Part-time

Ways To Create A Killer Blog That Will Drive New Business Leads | simplyzesty.com

It helps raise the profile of our company, while keeping hundreds of thousands of people engaged and coming back to get the latest social media news. It feels like the blog is large and established, but we had to start somewhere too when we wrote our first post and nobody knew about the blog.

With all that in mind, we wanted to create a post that shares some of our thoughts and tips on creating a business blog that gets traction and that can help you attract new business. The good news is that most of the technology and tools that you will need are cheap and easy to use and with some quality content you will be well on your way. Here are 25 things that you can do that will help your own business blog massively.

Starting Off

Use WordPress
There is a vast number of free blogging sites like Blogger that will help you create one in seconds. However, the most popular blogging site out there has to be WordPress, thanks to its ease of use and range of styles. The scope for personalisation and design is vast, the dashboard is straightforward, and while you can pay for premium features, you can still create a clean and stylish site. When your business and site gains more prominence, you can start thinking about customising the design, but as a starting point, you won’t find any better.
Put Your Blog Front & Centre
Many businesses treat their blog as something that complement the main site, it’s nice to have one, but its use is limited. What you should do is make the blog the main feature of your site, so when people come to visit, they will see all the content you’ve been posting. Don’t bury your blog underneath your site as that defeats its purpose. Put it front and centre so you can show off your knowledge and generate more leads.

5 Tools for Managing Multiple WordPress Sites from One Location

If you run more than one WordPress install, or if you have clients that run WordPress sites that you’re responsible for, then you know how much of a pain it can be to log in to each site every time you need to do things like update plugins, themes, or WordPress core itself.

With the release of WordPress 3.0, we now have the ability to create a network of WordPress sites with one installation through the multisite feature. However, your needs may go beyond what multisite allows you to do, and so you may need to explore other options.

Fortunately, there are a number of solutions out there that will let you manage multiple WordPress websites from one central location. In this article, I’ll share some options with you and give you a brief overview of each.

1. WP Remote

WP Remote

WP Remote is a simple and free solution that will allow you to do a few basic tasks related to managing multiple WordPress sites.

While you do need to install the WP Remote plugin for each WordPress installation, your administration panel for managing your sites is in one central location on the WP Remote site.

Here’s a look at the simple control panel on the WP Remote site:

WP Remote Features

  • Bulk update all WordPress installations
  • Create off-site backups
  • Update plugins that can be updated via the WordPress plugin page
  • Update themes that can be updated via the WordPress themes page

2. InfiniteWP

InfiniteWP

InfiniteWP is on a freemium model. (In other words, basic features are free, but you’ll need to pay for other feature upgrades such as auto-scheduling of WordPress site backups.)

Below is a video by the creators of InfiniteWP that will give you an idea of what the tool looks like:

InfiniteWP Free Features

The basic features of InfiniteWP are basic indeed, but they’re also pretty handy, and so many of us may not need the premium/paid features this plugin has. The basic features include the following:

  • One-click updates for the latest version of WordPress
  • Install and manage themes
  • Install and manage plugins
  • The ability to restore, download, and delete backups

InfiniteWP Premium Features

There are currently six available premium features available (with three more in the works). These are the currently available addons:

  • Install WordPress
  • Clone a WordPress installation
  • Schedule automated backups
  • Back up to repositories
  • Manage WordPress users
  • Save and run custom PHP code on multiple sites
  • Brand the InfiniteWP plugin with your company name or hide the plugin altogether

The premium addons currently in the works are the following:

  • Integration with Google Analytics
  • Manage posts and comments on multiple sites
  • Bulk create Posts, Pages, and Links
