Tablets and smartphones drive e-Commerce in Asia: Visa

SINGAPORE – The growth of smartphones and tablets, along with an improved perception of security is leading the internet to play a significantly bigger role in consumption across Asia, according to a recent study published by Visa.

Tablets and smartphones drive e-Commerce in Asia: Visa

Improved security perception is leading consumers to purchase online, according to Visa

In economies where smartphone and tablet penetration are high, consumers are already showing a tendency of picking up products through their phones or tablets. Of the 8,000 consumers surveyed, four in ten said they browsed products on their phones or tablet device last year. In fact, browsing on mobile phones exceeded 40 per cent in Korea, Hong Kong and Singapore. Hong Kong saw 13 per cent of its online purchases on mobile phones and 11 per cent on tablets.

“The prevalence of smartphones and tablets translates to easier online access for consumers to retailers anytime, anywhere, and we expect to see more people browsing and shopping on-the-go as a result,” said Paul Jung, Visa’s head of e-Commerce solutions for Asia, Central Europe, Middle East and Africa.

How to Choose the Best WordPress Hosting

 by

Two of the most important things for a web developer to consider is the web hosting company they will use and the type of hosting package they will choose. There are a lot of options and unfortunately, not all of them are right for hosting a WordPress website.

WordPress Specifics

There are a few things that are required in order to effectively run WordPress on a web hosting account. However, there are a few specifics that must be adhered to in order to run the latest versions of WordPress.

  • PHP – Version 5.2.4 or greater.
  • MySQL – Version 5.0 or greater.

Most web hosting companies not only support WordPress and its requirements, but there are many that will install the latest version for you on your server as a part of your set-up service at no extra charge.

In Singapore, QR codes on beers help bar patrons initiate anonymous conversations

If Greek consumers can use augmented reality and a chocolate bar to convey a secret message to a friend, it only stands to reason that patrons at Singapore-based Harry’s Bar should be able to use a beer bottle for much the same effect. Enter the Bottle Message, a new technology now in use at the multi-bar chain that lets shy patrons send anonymous notes to each other using beer bottles embellished with QR-enabled tags.

Conceived in partnership with ad agency Cheil Singapore, the Bottle Message system aims to let anyone start an anonymous conversation with another patron at Harry’s Bar, according to a Digital News Asia report. Launched in August at the company’s Harry’s Esplanade outlet, the Bottle Message system gives customers a QR code tag with the purchase of any beer. Once they download the Harry’s Bottle Message mobile app, those customers can then scan the QR code with their smartphone and write an anonymous message. The tag is then flipped over and placed on a second bottle of beer, and the patron asks the bar’s staff to deliver it to the fellow patron they have in mind. After the recipient scans the QR code, the two can chat using the mobile app. The video below explains the premise in more detail… >>>>  Sigue leyendo

Ecommerce, search and social media in China by the numbers [Infographic]

by  | http://thenextweb.com

We’re a fairly skeptical bunch when it comes to infographics. While we love the idea of telling a story visually, we believe that the originality is long gone and it is a medium that is all too frequently misused – something tech journos/bloggers are as much to blame for.

Every now and then though, we see an example which shows the potential of infographics, like this visual look at China’s Internet. The chart, produced by China-based SEO and Web design agency Them [via Resonance China], serves up a batch of impressive statistics and facts relating to the country’s ecommerce, search and social media spaces – each of which is dominated by strong local players.

Ogilvy One promotes Peter Moss, Lucy McCabe to reinforce global focus

Ogilvy One’s Lucy McCabe, Peter Moss

Moss is promoted from regional executive creative director to vice-president of customer experience. His new role sees him move away from directly managing the creative team to take on a planning function in working to understanding how consumers connect to define specific roles for communications and appropriate channels to achieve them. He will be responsible for mapping the connections between customers and channels, platforms and media and identifying key areas of ROI impact.

Reporting to Smith, McCabe joins Moss in driving the global focus in her new role as vice-president of consulting services as they aim to implement customer value measurement and optimise the buying process accordingly. Both Moss and McCabe will remain based in Singapore and continue working with country head Stephen Mangham as they still have a part to play in the agency’s operations there.

Prior to her promotion, McCabe was head of consulting in Singapore in working with regional planning head Mark Sinnock. She will continue working with Sinnock in her new role.

“I am delighted to have Lucy and Pete on the regional team. They are both really smart people who bring the experience and new thinking that is required to maximise the opportunity for our clients in today’s and tomorrow’s world,” said Smith, who was appointed as regional president in July. Celebrating Singapore’s 45th Birthday with Beautiful Photographs

Singapore – known as the Lion city may be just a tiny small dot on the geographical world map, but it has braved several adversities and hardships since its independence on August 9th 1965.

The republic is located on an island off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, 137 kilometres north of the equator, in the Southeast Asian region of the Asian continent. It is separated from Malaysia by the Straits of Johor to its north, and from Indonesia‘s Riau Islands by the Singapore Strait to its south. A city-state, Singapore is the world’s fourth leading financial centre and a cosmopolitan world city.

Singapore has a current diverse population of nearing 5 million people and growing, Singapore is made up of multi races such as the Chinese, Malays, Indians, Caucasians, and Asians (of various descent). It has the sixth-highest percentage of foreigners in the world.

Singapore has on-going land reclamation projects with ground obtained from its own hills, the seabed, and neighboring countries. As a result, Singapore’s land area grew from 581.5 km2 (224.5 sq miles) in the 1960s to 704 km2 (271.8 sq miles) today, and may grow by another 100 km2 (38.6 sq miles) by 2030.

Though a relatively small country, Singapore is alight with vibrance and energy, accompanied by its hospitable citizens.

Samsung, 3D projections, Google speed test and the iPad

by Barney Loehnis
I’ve come across a few interesting ideas this week. The first:

1. Mountains and Mona Lisa - Samsung >> this has limited application as an emerging media I admit, but I offer it firstly because I was bought up on Wales, but more importantly because it was the precursor to the second idea – which is much more applicable:

2. Monuments and masses – Samsung 3D projections>> 3D projection will grow and grow as a brand experience format. These two ideas  in tandem create quite an interesting space that Samsung is beginning to own – innovation with LED and lighting -  similar to the Crowdsourcing ideas in Liverpool Street and Trafalgar Square that T Mobile had so much success in. There are lots of examples of monumental 3D projections – one most recently by BMW in Singapore. I adore this sort of creative work, because it is the true fusion of physical and digital. It creates both a physical and digital Theatre for the Brand in which consumers co-exist and co-create. Developing these “sustained conversations and dialogues” is core to building brands and emotions between them and consumers. Sigue leyendo

It’s the community, silly!

by Shalu Wasu
Clients recover fairly quickly after being told that I cannot help them create a Social Media strategy! The discussion then quickly veers around the different ways in which Social Media can help in running their businesses better. We usually warm up by discussing the following.

  1. Listening, monitoring and insights gathering.
  2. Influencer mapping and building relationships with key influencers.
  3. Tactical campaigns, promotions, applications, viral videos etc.
  4. Creating blogs/sites and other forms of information dissemination.

It gets more exciting when I tell them that all of the above are really at the ‘periphery’ of Social Media and that the single most useful opportunity that Social Media offers is the ability for the client to build, nurture and grow a community / audience for the brand or product. Sigue leyendo

Case Study: Tiger Airways Selective Listening | Online Media Gazette

Tiger Airways

From the previous case study I did on Nestle, it seems like there’s a lot more companies that are also facing similar issues on Facebook with their customers. I am not going to push the blame on the customers but it’s more of a badly mismanaged social media case from them. The user backlash on Facebook seems to be going south for Tiger Airways after a few incidents that are unfavourable.

In a recent report, some users who are ‘fans’ of Tiger Airways Facebook page noticed that they were deleting negative comments from their wall and banning users who gives them those feedbacks. The way I see it, Tiger only wants their page to showcase the good side of customer feedbacks and hiding the negative aspects of it.

Tiger recently posted the above question on their fan page and it clearly got a lot of responses, both good and bad ones. However, the first ever comment was a negative one and instead of taking the feedback into their stride, the comment was ignored and the user was banned from posting again.

Under their discussion board, there were many questions left unanswered but there was one which got our attention.

The first post was marked as irrelevant by Tiger Airways but lucky for us, it’s still viewable by clicking ‘show post’. Here’s what we got:

Personally, I don’t think the above comment is irrelevant at all; as opposed to Tiger Airways’ opinion. It clearly was posted by a concerned customer of theirs and they should have handled it in a proper manner rather than going for the easier route of ignoring the comment.

At this time of writing this article, it looks like Tiger Airways has deleted all the negative discussions that were on their page.

Ironically, Derek Yeo, head of marketing at Tiger Airways was quoted once that he aims to get Tiger Airways to be more personal with their customers.

“You might be very cheap but if one has to go through a lot of trouble to avail your services it might not be worth it. We obviously reach out to budget and price-conscious travellers but we want to bring value to them not only through price but through a little extra smile, the ease with which they booked and seamless service.”

Given this goal, he has set out to put the airline much more firmly in touch with potential passengers. Here Yeo, a man with clear passion and energy for his brands, has a very definite plan.

For a Singapore based airline, I’m disappointed with the way they are handling their customers. Their approach to only take in the good side of things and block out the bad side makes me think that their communications department are made up of amateurs.

SMU Employs Social Media To Attract Potential Students

In Singapore, meritocracy is a a fundamental principle in the education system. Academic grades are considered as objective measures of the students’ ability and effort and having good academic credentials is seen as the most important factor for the students’ career prospects in the job market. How far you agree with the system; that I leave to you.

Amongst the local universities in Singapore, there’s only one that caught my attention; Singapore Management University (SMU). With the rise of popularity in using social media, SMU took that in their stride and naturally went on to set up a Twitter and Facebook page account; SMU Admissions and @SMUadmissions respectively.
