What You Can Learn From These 10 Infographics


Infographics have really been around for a couple of decades; traditional print media has long featured graphic-dominated presentations in places like the color front and back pages, often covering topics like intriguing statistical sporting events. But it has only been the last couple of years that they’ve become the go-to representation on the web for teaching an audience about the numerical, in a sleek and distributable format, which often goes viral when done right.

In this post we present to you a range of 10 contemporary infographics and some key takeaways that you can gain from each individual design. It should be noted that infographics really come in all shapes and sizes – but there are important differentiators that make some spread more widely, convey a real message (opposed to pooling “related” statistics together for “organization’s” sake), are clear in routing the reader along a relevant path(s) and use design elements that offer a helping hand in the information consumption process.

Wired Magazine came up with what probably wouldn’t be considered a conventional infographic by today’s standards, but is a throwback to where infographics came from. Shaped like the food pyramid, this condensed media diet approach is just what might remedy scores of information loaded readers. With a sectional look at all of the different ways that people spend their time online, we might see a move of infographics towards this style, tending to the most important reasons why infographics exist in the first place – to visualize the data.

  • PRO: Brilliant 3D design that provides quickly consumable information. It’s immediately engaging.
  • CON: The unhealthy message of telling their readers that they should be “enjoying media” for 9 hours a day!

Ecommerce, search and social media in China by the numbers [Infographic]

We’re a fairly skeptical bunch when it comes to infographics. While we love the idea of telling a story visually, we believe that the originality is long gone and it is a medium that is all too frequently misused – something tech journos/bloggers are as much to blame for.

Every now and then though, we see an example which shows the potential of infographics, like this visual look at China’s Internet. The chart, produced by China-based SEO and Web design agency Them [via Resonance China], serves up a batch of impressive statistics and facts relating to the country’s ecommerce, search and social media spaces – each of which is dominated by strong local players.

Make Your Own Infographics With Visual.ly


If you can’t get enough infographics, you’re in luck. After much anticipation, the data visualization platform Visual.ly has released some new tools for organizing data from your Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Visual.ly is a place to upload, view, create, and share visual data with other people and companies on the Web. Many online publications like Mashable, social media marketing companies like Flowtown, and even traditional news sources like the Wall Street Journalhave used the platform to make infographics that readers love to click on. (Flowtown’s “The Joy of Social Media: How Bob Ross Sees It” is a personal favorite.) The templates are almost the right size for a WordPress blog and even when condensed, they still look great on Pinterest.

The platform launched in private Beta in 2011.  Since then, Visual.ly has helped create 11,000 infographics and attracted 2 million visitors per month, according to TechCrunch.

The new creation tools are aimed at the casual social media user. A template called “Dr. Visually’s Automagical Facebook Monsterizer” will analyze your Facebook profile and photos to determine what kind of monster you are. (If you are using Facebook, it is assumed that you are a monster of some kind.) The application connects to Face.com, a free facial recognition software, to dig through your photos and figure out whether you were smiling in the picture and if you were wearing glasses. Once collected, the data is used to create a cartoon-like representation of your inner Facebook monster, complete with accessories.

Infographics: How to Strike the Elusive Balance between Data and Visualization

They started out as a social media experiment and then suddenly everyone wanted a piece.

A couple years back, if you dropped the word ‘Infographic’ or ‘Dataviz’ in a conversation, you would have been greeted by a good number of confused looks even if you were among other web designers.

Today, so many infographics have gone viral that it’s practically impossible to ignore them. You’ll find them tweeted by your friends who want to share an interesting new find, promoted by companies eager to display their growth trends and utilized by even the White House for its progress reports.

No matter what you are searching for online, whether employment statistics or endangered animals, you are sure to find an infographic for it. If you, miraculously, aren’t able to recall any that you have seen, take a look at this list of the 10 best infographics of 2011 via Nowsourcing to catch up.

Infographics spice up ‘boring’ data

Infographics are useful because they turn historically lengthy and tedious bulks of data in to something that’s much more interesting: a visual.

As a society heading into the new decade, we want to read less and see more. While this doesn’t bode too well for book publishers, it’s opened a whole new creative area for designers.

An increasing number of companies and clients are recognizing the benefits of infographics and want their data jazzed up and dressed for the prom. They know that their assiduously compiled information has a far better chance of being read, appreciated, shared and widely circulated if it looks less like an annual report and more like the next big meme. And if you aren’t convinced yet, here’s an infographic on why you should use infographics.

You will need your existing skills. And more.

While the graphics used in infographics have become more eye-catching and sophisticated, they are not too different in purpose from the charts and graphs we used to make in high school. After all, the objective is still to present data in a more visually engaging and accessible way.

However, print and web designers are having a hard time transferring their existing skills to infographics because, as the many aspiring infographics designers will tell you, designing good infographics isn’t as simple as it looks. Sure, you still need the same essential aesthetic and technical skills but you should also be able to effectively translate data into visuals. Most importantly, you need to ensure that the infographic acts as an informative tool and not as a visual distraction.
