JavaScript-Turbo: Head.js Speeds Up Your Website
By Denis PotschienPosted in Javascript

Complex websites would not work well without JavaScript. Often there are several scripts residing in the head of your HTML document. The more you embed, the slower your website, potentially. Head.js is a JavaScript tool that calls itself the only script you need. We have put it to the test and found out that Head.js can really boost the performance on websites with several scripts. The more scripts you call in the head the higher the effect Head.js can provide.

Endless Icons & Iconmonstr – Loads Of Free PNG-Icons And Growing Fast
By Dieter PetereitPosted in Freebie

There is a fresh repository in town and it deals with icons. We all know everybody loves icons. That’s understandable as icons are necessary replacements or at least additions to traditional navigation concepts in the wake of the mobile era. Today we introduce to you a project by name of Endless Icons, created and maintained by web developer Min Kim, based in Orange County, as well as a slightly more established project from Germany. Alexander Kahlkopf has already gathered almost 900 symbols, while Endless Icons is still working towards its first 100 icons. Both projects are subject to continuous and steady growth.

BookBlock And Windy: 2 jQuery-Plugins Provide Exceptional Content Navigation
By Denis PotschienPosted in jQuery

Chances are, you are not looking for sliders, you have to watch your steps to avoid not trampling on them. There are more sliders on this planet than content for them to take care of. As this is the case, why do we introduce two more variants to our readership? It’s simple. BookBlock and Windy, the new jquery-plugins by Codrops, are extraordinary, totally fresh and new in their approach. They offer a variety of exciting effects to have you present your content in ways not seen before. I am impressed.

Pixabay: More Than 40,000 Completely Free Photos And Illustrations
By Dieter PetereitPosted in Freebie

As designers we are always on the hunt for good pictures. Noupe certainly needs fitting imagery now and then and even more often. That’s where photo-services, stock image providers and the like come into play. There are big marketplaces, offering you high-grade imagery at more or less affordable rates. Then we find repositories with free usage policies but varying licenses, which at times are not easily comprehensible. I have certainly been in trouble with this kind of mine-seeking. Pixabay, a fresh repository with a quickly growing selection of excellent imagery, is different, dead-simple. All the pictures are free, no license conditions apply. Pixabay delivers pure public domain photos.

The Floppy Disk means Save, and 14 other old people Icons that don’t make sense anymore

What happens when all the things we based our icons on don’t exist anymore? Do they just become, ahem, iconic glyphs whose origins are shrouded in mystery?

Floppy Disk – Save

Save? Save where? You know, down there. Adding the Arrow to the 3.5″ floppy makes me smile. Is it pointing to under my desk? What’s a floppy? Why not a USB key? Maybe a cloud icon? That will be easy since there is only One Cloud Icon in the world.

Radio Buttons – Mutually Exclusive Choices

Why are they called Radio Buttons? Because my car radio used to have buttons where only one could be pressed at any time.  I miss my 8-track.

Seriously, short of a doctor’s office or the DMV when are we coming in contact with clipboards? And why is the clipboard the icon for Paste? Why not Copy? Or “fill out form?

We used to use smaller flat dead trees to keep our place in between the dead trees we would read from so that we didn’t lose our page. No, books didn’t “keep our place when we turned them off.”

Address Books and Calendars

We would write down all our addresses and phone numbers in a dead tree and carry it around with us. Sometimes we’d manage our calendar that way also. Everything was bound together with metal spiral loops. Let me check my Filofax.

Showcase of Interesting Navigation Designs

  • By Sarah & Adrienne Kahn

    1. The light blue text looks like it’s hyperlinked. One of the first things a user sees upon loading the page is the blue “Who’s Komrade” heading. The first thing we did was click it, but nothing happened. This started the user experience off on the wrong foot. With this unusual scrolling navigation, distinguishing the clickable from the unclickable is extremely important.
    2. The numbered navigation for Komrade’s past work does not stand out enough. The red circles look like yet more flowers, which caused us to pass over them several times before figuring out that they were the navigation. This goes back to the clickable/unclickable issue. Well-placed labels would go a long way here.
  • Everyone is always looking for interesting and effective ways to organize their website and allow users to move about and find things. But there’s a fine line between unexpected and unusable. Three points to consider in any navigation scheme are consistency, user expectations and contextual clues.

If page is long and provides different levels of navigation, will users be able to find their way through the site and use proper navigation quickly? Forcing visitors to use certain keystrokes to navigate, rather than what they’re used to, might be novel, but is that effective if you have to explain instructions prominently on your home page? Here are some examples for your reading pleasure. Seguir leyendo “Showcase of Interesting Navigation Designs”

A Collection of Mini Icon Sets

thumbIcons can add a lot of meaning to a website or web app design.

Used appropriately, they can make it faster for your visitors or users to complete the tasks they need to complete. But not every website design has space for normal, full-size icons (often 32×32 to 48×48 or sometimes even larger).

That’s where mini icons can come in handy. With the smallest versions of these icons sometimes coming in as tiny as 8×8 pixels and the largest generally being 16×16 pixels (though sometimes they’re slightly larger than that), they can fit into virtually any design.

And there’s a huge variety out there that can fit with almost any aesthetic style. Here are more than 35 of the best sets of mini icons out there (most featured here are free, though we’ve included a few premium sets, too).

These icon sets from Icon Dock are split up into different categories, including file types, web design, blog & CMS, and Ecommerce.

Bits Pics: Visualizing the Web’s Icons

Favicon Data visualization

The data visualization above shows the “favicons” of nearly 300,000 Web sites on the Internet. Favicons are small images used to identify a Web site in the browser.

The sizes of the icons are based on the amount of traffic each Web site receives, using data from Alexa.com, a traffic and Web metrics site.

The project, which I came across via Gizmodo, is the work of two programmers, David Fifield and Brandon Enright. They work for a company called Nmap that makes open-source security programs. Seguir leyendo “Bits Pics: Visualizing the Web’s Icons”

Freebies: Facebook, Twitter & RSS Feed Icons

We are delighted to release some more freebies: a few sets of icons, on Onextrapixel. There will be a series of icon sets and other freebies that will be released regularly on OXP.

Today’s release is a set of popular social media icons consisting of Facebook, Twitter and RSS designed exclusively for Onextrapixel by Helen Gizi, a talented self-taught graphic designer. The custom social media icons have been created especially to bring a new look to the normal and traditional icons.

Freebies: Facebook, Twitter & RSS Feed Icons

The set consist of the Facebook, Twitter and RSS Feed Icons and are available in two different sizes – 64 x 64px and 128 x 128px.

About the Creator – Helen Gizi

Helen is a self-taught graphic designer with over 8 years experience in the field. She runs a small blog providing free vector sets called pinkmoustache.net. Dealing mostly with print work and tight deadlines, she doesn’t have much time for personal projects. She’s quite comfortable working with both Adobe Illustrator and Corel Draw as she believes that these are just tools and nothing more. She does everything from scratch with a blank piece of paper and a pencil. Graphic design by Spanish designers is her major source of inspiration, and she dreams of living in Spain one day.

Recently she has also launched Vector Stories, a site that is dedicated to providing premium logo, icon or graphic design services. If you are in need of such services, Helen will be a great help.

Behind the Design

For the creation of these icons, Helen has decided to break from the traditional design of these social media icons and create something that is unique yet still retain the original feel. The icons are designed with the intention that they will be easier to use and integrate into any site. The set includes the Facebook, “Share” and “Like” icons, Twitter, “Follow me” icons and RSS feed icons. It took several hours of effort but she really enjoyed the process.
