Universal Translator is More Science-Fiction Than Reality

In most situations, when you look at a design concept, you’re supposed to get the sense that some day, at some point in the (perhaps distant) future, you’ll be able to get your hands on this. Just like we saw with Sony’s design for their Eclipse media management device. This one, though. Well, we can safely say that it’s really a concept. Not that it’s not cool — because it’s a great idea, but we’re just wondering if the designer had one too many drinks while they were watching their favorite Sci-Fi flick.

Universal Translator 540x381

As you look at the image above, you’ll have to realize that that’s the whole thing. There’s no other peripherals hiding out of view. What you’re looking at, is a thin slice of glass, that’s meant to do a whole lot of things. For example, it’s a universal translator. That’s right. Somewhere in there, there’s all the languages in the world, used on a daily basis we imagine, and all you have to do is hold it, and get instant translations. You could just take the universal translator, and throw yourself right into the middle of some unknown country and be all right. That’s a relief, for sure. Sigue leyendo

10 Tips For Aspiring Community Managers

community image

As the world of dominant brands becomes more fragmented, established companies and startups are hiring community managers to cultivate an engaged community in a digital world where customers’ experiences with the product is amplified through social media, whether good or bad. And it’s not just the experience that users value; the relationships and connections they are able to make with companies and fellow consumers are just as important.

As a result, engaging users online and off has become evermore important for both companies big and small. That’s because social media has revolutionized the idea of word-of-mouth marketing, providing not only an opportunity for companies to expand their brands but also creating the risk of a customer service nightmare.

Community managers, who come in all shapes and sizes depending on the company and its mission, are often the online face of their companies, and more increasingly, offline as well. They’re the social strategist, community builder, storyteller, marketer, product manager, designer and evangelist rolled all into one. But most importantly, they’re responsible in projects and initiatives that strengthen the community of consumers, users and customers of the company.

Though there’s no silver bullet to being a successful community manager, for those aspiring to become one, we’ve gathered some tips from community builders on what it takes to land a job and be effective at cultivating community. Sigue leyendo

Please don’t tell my mum I work in advertising. (She thinks I play the piano in a local brothel).

by jeremywaite

For Advertising : According to David Ogilvy

Advertising nourishes the consuming power of men. It sets up before a man the goal of a better home, better clothing, better food for himself and his family. It spurs individual exertion and greater production“.

Against Advertising : According to Jeremy Waite

Advertising encourages us to buy stuff we don’t need, with money we don’t have, to impress people we don’t like“.

The advertising industry gets a tough ride.  Now don’t get me wrong – I LOVE the industry. I’ve worked in it for over 14 years, but I do think it’s important from time to time to assess exactly what it is that we marketers / entrepreneurs are all trying to achieve (and why).

Advertising has developed a bad reputation in recent years but it also shapes cultures, it affects society and it grows brands.  But because advertising has proved so successful over the years, it has become this incredible thing that our entire economy can’t live without.

Am I saying that we should live without advertising? Nay, nay and thrice nay!  But do I think that our motivation for selling things is wrong?  Much of the time, yes. Sigue leyendo

Kimberly-Clark’s Pull-Ups introduces potty-training iPhone app

By Elaine Wong

Igo-potty-1

Just when you thought iPhone app developers had seized every thinkable opportunity out there, along comes this one: Now, you can potty-train your kid using a free mobile app from Kimberly-Clark. The maker of Huggies diapers and Pull-Ups training pants is introducing a new app, iGo Potty, this week that does just well, exactly that. It encourages both parents and kids alike to participate in the potty-training process (and hopefully make it fun along the way) with interactive features like customizable potty reminders, prizes and games and even special calls from “Patty the Potty.” (Yes, the toilet is calling. Make sure you get your toddler to answer it.) Sigue leyendo

Scitable: Science Made Social [Interview]

Posted by Lauren Dugan

scitable Education is increasingly becoming digital, using social networks, videos and collaborative online tools to enhance the learning experience. One of the largest online social education communities is Scitable. A hybrid between a virtual classroom, a social network and a scientific journal repository, Scitable boasts several hundreds of thousand users around the world. We recently got to speak with Vikram Savkar, SVP and Publishing Director at Nature Publishing, about what Scitable is, what it offers to students, and the future of social education.

Can you give us a brief background of Scitable? Where did the idea for a collaborative science community come from?

Scitable is a spin-off of Nature Publishing Group, one of the world’s leading publishers of scientific research journals. Scitable is a collaborative online learning space for science, aimed at formal learners at the undergraduate, graduate, and high school levels and informal learners of all ages and from all walks of life.

To a large extent, the idea for a collaborative science education community came right out of the way science itself works. Science isn’t an isolated discipline — it’s inherently social. All scientists pick up data and conclusions from peers and extend them with new insight of their own; and most scientists directly collaborate with peers when developing their theories or designing experiments. We realized that a powerful solution for training scientists has to foster some degree of this collaboration. Otherwise it’s only educating students about the facts, not the process, of science. Innovation Case: Creating A World Class Innovation Unit by Stefan Lindegaard

Leadership from the Inside Out — Part II by Gary Hamel

In my previous post, I introduced you to Drew Williams. For seven years Drew served as assistant vicar at St. Andrews, an Anglican parish in Chorleywood, England. When he arrived in 2003, Drew found a church that was big but not growing, and a congregation that was loyal but not energized. Mark Stibbe, head vicar at St. Andrews, challenged Drew to develop a plan that would change this.
